Wake Up/Lockup Problems

Starting a week or two, I've encountered some problems that I've been unable to resolve.

1. Background: Computer goes to sleep after two hours of non-use, and this has worked correctly for well over a year.

2. Computer is set to wake up at 0200 for daily backup, as a Task; this, too, has worked well.

3. Recently, I started finding that, around 0400/0500, when I would get up, and I would press a mouse key to reawaken the computer, both the computer and the monitor would wake up, but the machine would be locked up. I found that I could hold down the power key for about eight seconds, turn it back on, and when I would get the normal black & white screen about choices, if I chose "start normally," all was well.

3a. A thread here about a clock updating site not working led me to change from that site to NIST, and the problem went away for a few days.

4. Then, I started finding that pressing the mouse key would wake up the computer and the monitor, but I would then get the cursor and the "busy circle" on the screen, with the computer locked up. if I repeated the power-key/start-normally process, all was well. I filed a support ticket with Logitech, and got a reply. I updated the ticket two days ago, have not heard from them as to further suggestions.

5. I have also found that if, instead of using a mouse key, I would press on the Enter key, computer and monitor would start and all was okay.

6. Then, this morning, I found the computer itself was running around 0500, but the monitor would not come out of sleep mode, and I had to again use the power button.

7. I don't see anything in the Event Viewer that clues me into what is happening, unlike the error messages I found after reading about the clock-setting site problem. There are some details in various Event Viewer logs that don't tell me anything. I did see that the machine awoke just before 0200, as it should have, but the backup did not run and there was nothing in the Event Viewer about that that I've seen so far.

I could certainly post such error messages if so requested by someone who understands the Event Viewer and tells me which log(s) from which information posted here might help.

Avast!/Super AntiSpyware/Malware Bytes/chkdsk turn up no anomalies, and the computer demonstrates no problems whatsoever once I get it running.

8. Here endeth Chapter the First of Mine Tale of Woe.

I had a similar problem, but mine would just freeze the mouse. This solution, though not perfect, might work for you: For "Power Options" I set Turn Off Display and Put Computer to Sleep to NEVER.

When this worked, I tried changing the Display to 15 minutes and it will worked.

Lemme know if this helps!

Thanks, but as that simply defeats the purpose of the sleep function for me, namely reducing the use of electricity, I'd not want to do that. (I'm assuming, as I cannot tell from your reply, that you did not restore the Sleep function.)

At least the computer must have been watching me write the original message in this thread yesterday, as this morning at 0500, it was asleep and woke up properly when I pressed the Enter key.

My Computer

A great deal of frustration, of getting up extremely early to run lots of tests, and other irrelevant comments aside, the problem has been isolated:

I have an old Epson Stylus CX6400 all-in-one that was given to me, and which has apparently developed a serious malady. The machine is connected with a USB cable; when the cable is unplugged, the computer wakes up properly.

The problem went from not waking up properly using the mouse to also locking up when pressing the enter key.

Epson says that they know of this problem with certain computers, but not with mine, and that they don't consider it to be their responsibility, that the computer bios should be updated to allow Epson printers to communicate with USB ports. However, in my case, considering that all was well until a few weeks ago, and that the problem went from using the mouse to also using the enter key, I have concluded that the printer shall be replaced.

Hey, it stinks about Epson/printer, but I had a similar problem with HP/scanner. HP said the scanner was too old (7 years) and they would not support it. Oh well...
