hey guys, i have a funny little problem when i boot up. after i type in my password on the login screen, and the welcome screen appears, when my desktop appears, it just shows my mouse pointer and nothing else for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. ive read a similar thread on this forum by googling my problem, and the solutions provided didn't really help my situation. ive noticed that this has happened alot more recently. is there a way to fix this? oh, and if this helps, i did have vista glazz on my computer twice, but i uninstalled them due to slower performance. oh, and before i uninstalled it, i unpatched my system and then uninstalled it. so, please help me! i also am using a compaq presario by the way.

Any BSOD's? (blue screens of death)

If not, try this:
run sfc /scannow
run defrag c: -w
run a full disk check
Run an online NOD32/Norton/Kaspersky malware check
Run a Memory Diagnostic (type mem in start search to access Memory Diagnostic)

Antivirus Scanners & Internet Security Tools

2. Run a System File Check to check the system for integrity violations
note- follow this tutorial- but instead of the defrag command, use sfc /scannow then run the defrag command as instructed in the tutorial
How To Make Vista more responsive and faster

3. Check your HDD that Windows is on for Attribute Corruption. (step 2)
(see above tutorial)

note-Failure of the scans/corruption reports that cannot be fixed will require restore/reinstall

it doesn't happen all the time, it happens randomly. sometimes the desktop immediately appears or it's black with the mouse pointer, then the taskbar appears, then the desktop. this all takes about 30 seconds- 1 min.

Do you have hybrid graphics? Before launching the Vista desktop it takes a few seconds to load either my 9300M GS or Intel Integrated.

Reinstall Norton. Your product key will still work. You can also contact Norton for support but you'll probably have a better chance here in the forums with getting an answer.
