vista hang up/stall

Ok, Ill say from the start that I have NO idea about things, ok? But I'll do my best to give what info I can.

Im running vista 64bit home premium on my acer desktop. Its been absolutly fine until today. I uninstalled a game and suddenly...well.. every time I close any application the system hangs up/stalls..the cursor goes into 'wait' mode and I can't do anything, the windows key does nothing, etc. Task manager does come up after cntrl/alt/dlt, but it wont do anything - the cursor won't even close it. If Im in a game and tab out, the same thing happens. Sometimes it happens once Ive booted. The desktop pic may be there but the desktop icons wont be...

If I go to the menu screen and hit log off then suddenly things happen as they should, but the machine, naturally, logs off.

Ive run a virus scan using avast, but it found nothing.

Im sorry I can't be more specific. Hopefully what I have said will ring bells for someone, lol. If you need more info please tell me how to get it for you as brain small and not work proper.

Which game are you running? Does this happen in other software as well or just the game? You could first try patching the game and then your video and sound drivers. Use Belarc Advisor to find out your hardware system info or type dxdiag into the start menu, press enter than save all the information and post it. There might be problems listed there.

well, its not just the game - world of warcraft - I uninstalled champions online beta and all this started. Not sure if its a process left behind or what...plus the machien doesnt stay active long enough for me to explore things properly....and of course, even though its a fairly new machine which comes with vista, one doesnt get a disk to reinstall the os...

Try a system restore to the day before you installed the beta. There might be an option to create restore disks but you'll need to check the laptop/pc manual.

Does safe mode work? Hit F8 to bring up the menu. If it doesn't try safe mode with command prompt and type rstrui.exe at the command prompt.

right, well, I booted the machine then switched off before booting was done. Then botted again and vista asked if I wanted repairs. it then offered system restore. Alas, whilst its booted and popped back to a slighty earlier time, the same prob exists... hitting f8 doesnt bring up anything

managed to get command prompt up, but nothinghappens as its stalled again

Try command prompt with safe mode again, then enter sfc /scannow.

thanks...trouble is I can't get the machine to boot into safe mode. I hear that service pack 2 came out last week? Im trying my best to d/l and instal it in the hope that it may help, but as the machine hangs within a couple of minutes of booting - unless Ive managed to launch WOW - then its not going too well, lol. And of course, when I tab out of wow it hangs...

Ill certainly keep trying, however
