Sleep Problems with Acer Aspire 4530-6823

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115556I just got this Acer Aspire 4530-6823 a couple of weeks ago. It's running on Vista Home Premium 32bit. I've been using the computer for many hours a day and I have wireless on all the time. I deleted some bloat ware... hope these are not the reasons why the following is happening...

So the problem... sometimes I close to lid to go to sleep, and it doesn't. In fact, it will restart and say that it recovered from an unexpected shut down. What scared me was the blue screen error I got today. In addition, it now takes longer to go from the password screen to the desktop. It happens twice a day now... and this and other things in my life are making me really anxious.

What should I do? I know Vista has problems like these, so I was wondering whether I should just wait and hope Windows 7 is any better. Would it solve these problems? Also, if anyone knows my Acer model... is this computer the problem or is it the Vista? Thanks a ton!

If sleep doesn't work it's probably drivers. Try updating your video and sound drivers. If the laptop is relatively new look for an option to create recovery discs first. As for the BSOD's/STOP errors there is a guide I've written in my sig if you want to debug them. If not, .zip them up and upload them.

Since this is my first time ever thinking about updating my drivers... Quick question. I checked the Acer website... for my model, it said it was last updated in 2008. Is that what I should download or are there other websites with more updated versions of the drivers I am using. Thanks.

Could you go to c:\windows\minidump zip the dump file (*.dmp) and upload it for us to look at?

I found the minidump folder, but it did not have any files in it. By the way, I just remembered... the blue screen error message contained something about vbsvideo.sys or vbs something... if that helps.

You getting a blue screen that has numbers on it and says "STOP" followed by stuff? or is it just freezing. The vbs cold be *.vbs (a viual basic script) or vbs. *

You can go into the event viewer (type event viewer in search) and go into the app tab t see what errors are listed.

f there isnt a dump file there you can also search for *.dmp and see what you find

I got a blue screen yesterday that had various numbers on it. I do not remember if it had STOP or not. I had to restart, but I remember it listing only one file on the top of the screen... saying that the problem stemmed from vbs.

I tried Event Viewer and it listed WMI and VSS. For yesterday, which is when I got the blue screen error with numbers... it only listed WMI. Could not find any .dmp files.

So it happened again today... I attached the .dmp file, ken. I guess ccleaner got rid of the minidump files. Anyway, thanks for your help.

That BugCheck strike relates to your wireless card which seems to causing your crash probably because it isn't shutting down properly. Update your wireless driver - is it an Atheros card?

I have no idea whether it is... however, I checked the driver updates on the Acer website and it listed Wireless LAN... Atheros, Foxconn, and QMI. How would I check though?

Open up the start menu type devi and open device mangager. Accept the UAC prompt. Open up the category NetWork Adapters. Look for an ethernet option and a wireless optin. Search for the wireless driver on the Acer website.

It happens to be an Atheros wireless card. So should I backup the drivers before I download the updated one or is that not necessary? And also, should I also update my ethernet driver and other outdated ones as well? Thanks a lot, Frostmourne!

Ethernet isn't likely to be updated. Update the wireless drivers from the acer website. You can roll back the drivers if they don't work. Even so, create a system restore point anyway. Can't be too careful:)

Was anything plugged into the laptop when it went to sleep? Download SP2 too, and use the diag kit in my sig to look and update any old drivers.

Hey! thanks so much for replying.
There were nothing plugged in during sleep. not even mouse.
Yes i just updated and installed all drivers plus service pack 2 yesterday.
So far it only BSOD once, i'll check back if it happens the second time.

Another problem is that i realised i kept getting cut off from the internet.
Usually its supposed to be "Local and Internet", but it changes to "Local only".
This happens every 5 minutes.
End up i have to download the service pack using my desktop then transfer the file over to the acer.

I'm so sorry for being such an ass. This laptop is only 3 days old and there's so many problems already, can't imagine whats next.
