| vista 64 home prem | Power Supply Change Issue Help, Just spent 3 hours on the phone with HP and got no help. I recently purchased a HP 6180, Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5ghz. 6 gig of ram, 1333 fsb. Here is my problem. I purchased a Corsair 750 watt power supply to run the new video card I just purchased. I believe in installing one thing at a time and test it to make sure all is well. (I have not installed the video card until I get the power supply Issue resolved first). The power supply was a pretty basic install. When I start the system everything runs ok until windows starts to load. The black screen with the little green night rider bar then the system shuts down. I went into cmos and looked for adjustments and tried a few and no luck. I ran the diagonistics for the processor and hard drive and ram. All checked out ok. The power supply is working ok, otherwise I would not be able to do anything. Every time windows vista 64 home prem goes to boot the system shuts down and then restarts. I tried the reload f11 tool and no luck. As soon as I reinstall the 300watt stock power supply back into the computer, everything works fine. Please Help. HP is sending me recovery disks or something, but I don't think that is the problem. Maybe if I reload windows with the new power supply installed it will work. Any help would be appreciated. Mike |

| Vista Home Premium 64-bit | Re: Power Supply Change Issue That is strange, the power supply should have nothing to do with windows. It just supply's voltage to your drive and motherboard. Windows has no clue what kinda of psu u use or anything. Do you have a good multi-meter to check the voltage's out of power supply to make sure they are good! Do you have all the cables hooked up right?? The 24pin to the mobo, and the 8pin to the mobo also? |

| vista 64 home prem | Re: Power Supply Change Issue I know that all the connectors are ok. the system powers up and I can access anything in cmos, I even did the diagonostic test that is provided by HP with their computers. Does the system draw more power when windows starts? I have been looking all around the web for answers. It has to be something with windows The power supply is new. The 24 pin is installed correctly and I have only a 4 pin I think that is just power for the fan anyway.. I have a volt meter and I will check it out. |

| vista 64 home prem | Re: Power Supply Change Issue Yes, the second connector. Is it possible that the power supply could be bad? The computer wound not start up and run if it was, Right? The screen pops up and states Windows error recover. You have 2 options 1. launch repair, or start windows normaly. I have tried both. Windows repair goes to another screen and shows a slidder bar the says loading windows files. Then goes through the same BS and shuts down. I will have to wait til after the holiday to call Corsair to see if I can get anywhere. |

If so, then that connector referred to earlier needs plugging in there. |

| vista 64 home prem | Re: Power Supply Change Issue I have that plug and have put the proper modulated plug in there. My power supply has an 8 pin for that and you simply separate the plug into 2 four pins. I tried switching back and fourth to see if that was the issue, No luck. All the fans are running in the tower and power lights good. Could it be a software issue? Motherboard issue? Hard drive? System starts and runs perfect on stock 300 watt PS. |

Goto the System Health page where you can monitor voltages and fan speeds. Operate your optical drive (insert a CD). What happens to the voltages? Do any of them fall outside the permitted tolerances (either above or below) when compared to the following table? |

| Vista Home Premium 64 Bit | Re: Power Supply Change Issue You may also want to compare the pin assignments on the 24 pin plug with your old PSU plug. As I recall, both Compaq and HP have in the past been known to 'modify' the pin assignments so you would have to purchase a proprietary PSU from them. |

I cannot vouch for other manufacturers, but I know for a fact that DELL used modified PSUs in some of their systems, annoyingly using exactly the same connectors but with the number and relative positions of the various voltage lines changed. |
