Administrator Acct Access

When I initially set up my VISTA x64 Home Premium computer, as the Administrator I was able to easily access the other 4 standard accts set up on the computer. Sometime during the last 6-8 months, the only accounts I can now 'see' are mine and the 'Public' acct. It seems that I'm now not able to access data on the other standard accounts, even though I'm still the Administrator. I'm sure I haven't done anything personally to lose this access - perhaps it occurred during a Windows update? Anyway, I need to access the other accounts, and would like to learn how. I attempted to follow the directions on how to disable hidden built-in administrator acct thru the C:\Windows\System32:> prompt (even tho I'm not sure that that would address my problem), but ran into the 'Number 5 error,' and still couldn't get thru it by right-clicking on CMD and running as Administrator. Any help would be appreciated (I'd like to get this problem fixed before my kids get any older). Thx/

Are you sure you are still in the admin group? with the built in account anyone can remove you from it. find out by right click a file or folder see who owns it and if the admin group can acces it. If so look at your access. IF you are still admin and you want to remove the built in admin account you can type cmd in search in window type net user administrator (password) /disable.

IF YOU AREN'T IN THE ADMIN GROUP AND YOU DISABLE THIS you are out of luck. so make sure first

Ken, one of the other accounts shows the 'General' tab only, with grayed-out attribute options under Properties - so you can't even tell who owns it. Another acct includes me as the Administrator. The User Accts in the Control Panel show that I'm the (only) Administrator. I'm not sure what you mean about 'removing the built-in admin acct (disable). How would that gain me access to all accounts?

I wasn't sure you could get into an Admin account. If you account is in the admin group, then its probably a permissions problem. I thought that you weren't able to get into your admin account (and used the built in Super administrator account)

Permissions may have been changed. was anything on the HD changed? was it from aprevious OS, or did you re-install (not clean install) over an old installation?

tell me some more about the problem

As far as I know, I didn't change any permissions that might've taken away my access to other standard accts. The OS was installed with purchase, and not changed. Like I said, Properties shows that I (Administrator) have access to files in the other accounts, but when I go thru Windows Explorer or Computer to access them from my Administrator acct, I don't see them anymore (I used to).

So when you open up user accounts and click manage accounts, what do you see?

So when you open up user accounts and click manage accounts, what do you see?

Selecting User Accounts, then clicking on 'Manage Another Account' gives me the choice of changing 3 other standard user accounts, a 'ASP.NET Machine Account' that says is a standard user, and then my own Administrator Account. But when I'm in my own Administrator Account, I can no longer 'see' the other accounts, as I had previously - and therefore can no longer review, or change them.

Can you type manage into the start menu then choose computer management. Accept UAC and then click Local Users and Groups and Users. Is there anything different there?

I went to computer management, but I didn't see anything that looked like it could be UAC (I don't know what that is).

OK, I'm going to assume that "mom, dad, Adam, and Jon" constitutes all of the accounts you expect to see, given I'm unaware of the actual size of your household ;)

In short, the accounts are there but the standard "Computer Management" MMC snap-in (compmgmt.msc) has for some reason lost its standard "Local Users and Groups" component.

What happens when you run LUSRMGR.MSC? Does the (standalone) users&groups snap-in pop up, and does it list the same user accounts you saw from the NET USER command?

That option isn't available in Home Premium. Can you try control userpasswords2 at the cmd prompt?

Can you switch some users to admin/standard and see if that will fix it. Apply and reboot at each step.
