Is this an HP Laser Jet 4L printer?
Have you downloaded the 64-bit driver etc from the Manufacturer?

HP 4L Laser to Vista 64 SOLUTION!!! I had the same problem trying to use my old workhorse HP 4L laser printer with Vista 64. Tried the usb-parallel printer cable and vista won't recognize it because it's "digitally unsigned". Tried all kinds of on-line ideas and work-arounds. Fix was sooooo simple. Buy and install a parallel port adaptor card. OMG!! Got one from newegg.com for 25 bucks including shipping, was here in three days. Installed the port, their cd loaded the port drivers, Vista recognized it, added my trusty 4L as my default printer, and it's good to go!!! Part is called "1 port DB25 par pci" SKU = 15-158-040 mfg StarTech. It was $19.95, and the whole installation (put it where the dial-up modem card is installed - you'll never use it) configuration and testing took maybe 15 minutes total. I'm throwing away all the rest of the junk I bought in an attempt to work-around or fool Vista. Printer works as flawlessly as it always has.

the problem is the cable...the only mfg that makes that usb-parallel cable makes it "digitally unsigned" and the work-arounds don't work. Just buy a new parallel port adaptor card (20 bucks from newegg.com), install it where your dial-up card/jack is in your present computer and hook up the printer. Their included cd will configure the port drivers, vista will recognize the printer, and buddy, you'll be good to go!
