    Getting SP2 on there should be a matter of priority. It may be a "shotgun" fix for all of the problems.

    If you haven't already done so, try downloading the full SP2 package before installing it, rather than relying on Windows Update to apply the service pack for you. "Method 3" in this article:

    And about the 'exception code' you mention, it is different for the same event (well, same to me) at another time today:

    Thanks for the advice, I followed your instructions about downloading SP2, started the installation and after a while got the screen attached below, so again - no success.

    Hi,
    Just to let you know that I fixed the problems by downloading a good copy of the uniplat.dll file and replacing the old uniplat.dll in the system32 folder with it. I also had invalid (0kb) regsvr32.exe file in that folder and replaced it with a good copy from the recovery partition. With that, the repair install of SP1 from the Vista dvd finally completed successfully and afterwards I was able to install SP2. All problems solved now!

    just to verify the files you whould run a system file check by going to the search bar and \

    running sfc /scannow.

    RE: The advice on SP2...i would suggest runnung ALL your protection apps prior to installing SP2 or you could possibly make a bad situation very worse...
    What apps do you use for protection currently ? ?
