DELLS IMAGE RESTORE on VISTA

has anyone else used this on their systems? im about to use it, dell said my computer has it. Id rather try a clean install thats easier to do, then REINSTALL the OS dvd and then have to do the driver cd and app cd..... I realize image restore brings computer back to way it was when i bought it.... tech support said if i have a virus it wont fix it and it wont work... i told them i HAD trojans and a PAV.EXE virus a cpl of months ago but its been cleaned and gone since then.....trouble is having that left its mark on the system, some things dont work right or dont work at all and they did before the virus.....

so i guess im wondering, BEFORE i do, do you think it will clear up some of these glitches?? i backed up what i want saved, not the whole drive , just what i want to keep... doing this must wipe the HD to some degree, if they tell you to back up data... right?? so maybe by doing this the things that are messed up or stopped working, do you think this will give it a fresh start as far as HD is concerned? hopefully fix the glitches.... is doing this sort of like reinstalling vista again, only without the dvd?

please let me know what ANYONE thinks, i plan to do it today sometime:)

i also have added 2GBs of memory since i bought the system, so should i remove the modules to make it back to 1 GB when i bought it? or wouldnt it matter....

A full format and restore/reinstall will clear any virus's , there are those out there that say some virus's can survive a full reformat but their making it up ;)

there is a problem though , you have to be very carefull what you back up as the certain virus's can lie dormant in svaed files , you put them files back on a newly formatted drive and your back where you strarted , this is VERY rare though and it depends on what your backing up

edit..........i forgot to mention you MUST reformat your entire drive before reinstalling , using a restore facility like the one thats on your hard drive from dell most likely wont get rid of some virus's , and just to throw another spanner in the works some virus's can infect your restore partition :p again very rare

I DONT have any viruses anymore.... i was saying that the residue leftover FROM HAVING a virus can mess things up on your system.... thats why i wanted to know as my last ditch effort, after trying EVERYTHING, is doing a image restore, with my dell computer, the thing to do? is doing a clean install with that , going to sort of redo the HD and hopefully get things working normally again? or is there something else i can do WITH my OS vista DVD that came with my system that i can do from that??

My Computer

well NO then , if you do an image restore the virus/'s could still be there but the chances are extremely slim , if it was a boot sector virus it most definately WILL still be there

the ONLY way to ensure you get rid of them properly is to do a FULL reformat (fdisk) and FULL restore with your vista dvd and dont backup ANY files or folders

i copied your capitol letter idea did it help get my message across better?? ;) ;)

tbh the chances are you'll be fine so i wouldnt worry :)

if you tell us what "glitches your having we may be able to help and you may not have to reinstall

i didnt do the restore yet.. and i only capitalized letters to make the point across better. LOL , again. there is NO virus anymore. this forum and another malware forum tech helped me get rid of it all.... if there is still one on here then my NEW VP program would be picking it up.and so there isnt. the glitches are the aftermath of the goofy bugs... and i have done all i can do and all shawn as well as others and other sites to fix the issues but nothing worked...ill try the restore... i just thought if anyone here ever tried it, how it worked and how things were afterwards...

id never trust anything from Dell but thats just me ;) the factory reset will solve your problems :)

removing PAV from your system shouldnt pose any problems ive removed it from countless pc's and never had an issue , its very odd your having problems , are you sure their down to PAV?

well its a dell computer, cant change that now can i? yes it was that PAV.EXE and since been long gone.. some other trojans too... my son was on that stupid P2P for all of 3-5 minutes and i saw the thing come on to the computer as soon as he was listening to a song. i pushed him out of the way and shut it all down, then went right to malware to get rid of it....

well its a dell computer, cant change that now can i? ..

no im talking about the PC but the restore method , you mention you have a Vista DVD right? I assumed you were using a recovery partition with Dells system restore thats what i wasnt sure about , your better off doing a full reformat and full reinstall with a os DVD , but i dont know if thats what you were talking about

no ken i havent done it yet. i cant find the printers cd, and i need that to reinstall the software for the printer. i called the company and they are sending me a new cd. so when i get it then ill do it..

archie, id rather do the PC restore, image restore that dell has on the inspiron i own. yes its a small partition that has the OS.. dell techs said that there really isnt a huge difference to doing a pc restore or a manual reinstall with the dvd. except the length of time it takes and order to do it all and all the cds to reinstall. id rather use the pc restore function. yes it still formats the HD and wipes out the data but takes way less time...... i didnt get all that much extra crap on my system... looks like from my paper, i have adobe software and MS works preinstalled... i got 3 dvds, the OS reinstall, the driver and utility, 1 application , but they are all already on the system... i did get another cd, its roxio creator & Mydvd 9.0. it says on the disc , program install this cd.. so i guess i have to install that too....

My Computer

no ken not yet. i have to wait for my printer cd, ordered a new one lost the original. i need that to reinstall my printer.

all i have is adobe software and MS works preinstalled. didnt pick anything else when i got it...

archie, yes im doing the faster version pc restore, image restore dell has on the system... itll wipe out the HD and do it faster is all. itll be like it was when i first took it out of the box. thats a good thing... only cd i have to INSTALL, is the roxio creator cd, it says its a program and i have to install it... it doesnt say its already on the system ... full reformat takes too long. and i dont want to take the chance of messing up with the drivers and making sure they are done in order and all that crap... hopefully this restore will have fixed the issues.... cant copy or paste drag or drop, permission issues and recycle bin issues, not emptying at all let alone looking empty.... have tried everything people told me to do on this site as well as other techy sites... so my guess is its all the aftermath of this goofy bug i had...
