Hi,

Could anyone please help me in the below problem
I had 2.5GB of RAM in HP laptop. OS - vista home premium service pack2.
The system works fine.
I upgraded to 4GB RAM(2*2GB). when upgraded to 4GB in bios able to see as ~3.33GB of RAM. I am able to see microsoft progress bar also, but after that the screen is blank and able to hear windows logon sound but no display. The screen is black.
When installed only the new 2GB of RAM the system work fine. So no problem with the new 2GB also. But with 4GB the screen is blank. I have nvidia GeForce 7400 graphics card. Is there any configuration need to be done in vista before installing 4GB of RAM?

What is your HP laptop model? Can it support 4GB? Please list memory used (be specific) and laptop model.

Couple of things. In bios do you have a setting max memory? if so it should be unchecked. the 3.3 gigs is a function of the 32bit OS and not a problem mine is the same.

If after the max mem is unchecked, can you try booting into safe mode (F8 on reboot) what happens?

For 32-bit OS - 4GB minus your video card memory and the address space allocated to a couple other hardware resource. Typically, the realistic maximum memory is somewhere between 2.5GB and 3.5GB. Ken, you beat me again.

I checked BIOS setup there is no option for maximum memory.
Is there any other option to make 4GB workable in my laptop?

Uneless you mobo has pae that max useable is 3.3 in 32 bit. does it use that?

Ken

edit: for that computer the max memory it can handle is 2x 1 gig. If you are trying to put 2 x 2 gig in it will not work

It might say it, but it's screwing up your computer. Go back to 2GB. Sorry...

My model is HP Pavilion dv6226tx and it supports 4GB.

I would like to inform you that System is capable of recognizing 4GB of memory. However, due to the 32-bit limitation of MS Windows/Mac OS, Operating System can only utilize 3.25GB of the memory when 2GB + 2GB are installed. Therefore we recommend the configuration of 2GB + 1GB = 3GB for this system.

Please click on the link below to check the specification of memory:

Is there any other configuration needs to be done for graphics card to accept 4gb?

S

OK

If it can use 4 gigs total, your bios must have a enable pae in it. If it does then you can if it doesn't then you cant

Okay, you originally said dv6000. That makes a big difference.

yes sorry. I didn't see the model properly it's dv6226tx model.
pae i see from wikepedia is when more than 4gb is required. till 4gb it's not required.
Is there any graphics driver update to make the use of 4gb RAM?
