Logon Process Failure

Hey guys,

I was on YouTube earlier today when I noticed that the videos were already completed buferring, but the videos were lagging; and Firefox was performing kind of slow. I decided to re-start my computer. After re-starting the computer the logon process took extremely long, then an error message appeared:

Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog.

Failure - Security Options

I waited for the desktop to appear, then re-started again. But the perofrmance of the logon is still extremely slow. Any suggestions?

Try rebootaing into safe mode, and then reboot normally.

do you have another user on the machine that you can log on as?

I do not have another user on the computer. But I will try rebooting in safe mode right now.

BTW, it also is taking a very long time to shut-down.

Also, do you have any idea why this would happen?...
I have been having this kind of issue with this computer for a very long time.

Okay, I rebooted in safe mode and then rebooted normally.

The logon process is still very slow. The start bar is taking a long time to load, as well as the desktop background, icons, antivirus, and other start-up apps.

BTW, I downloaded uTorrent yesterday, but did not download anything but the program. Could this have possibly caused the problem?

did you install utorrent? if you can get in do you have a backup you can restore from?

try running system file checker (sfc /scannow) to verify the system files. If that doesnt help try a repair install from the dvd.

Make sure you have a backup

since you can get into the system (even slowly) you might want to set up a second user account to see if the slow down is specific to your current user

Okay, I did a system restore to a couple of days ago when my computer was running fine. I am still having the issue.

Open Start/Run/taskschd.msi

Disable all the scheduled tasks except your antivirus update

Enable them one at a time to see which process(es) causes the problem

Additionally, you can check your hard drive for failure.

Its time to start thinking about a re-install.

Do you have a vista dvd? if so you can boot from it and do a repair install.

Other wise clean install

The only two processes listed are:

Ad-Aware Update & RecoveryCD


I have noticed that the Ad-Aware icon has not been listed in the sytem tray (next to the clock, if "system tray" is the right term.) since I installed it. Normally it would be there. (from my previous experiences)...

I believe the RecoveryCD is a HP pre-installed service, if I'm not mistaken.

Do you think the Ad-Aware could be the problem?

I do not mind re-storing to factory condition... But I just did about two weeks ago. I had been experiencing the same problem before the re-installation of Windows.

I was also using Ad-Aware at that time... could Ad-Aware somehow be causing this problem?



BTW, last time I re-installed a window called PC-Doctor seemed to be checking my drives and memory. Is it a "Normal and/or Safe" program?

Ad-Aware is very popular (although I lean toward Spybot and others). Doubt that could be the problem. Run chkdsk.

When I enter chkdsk into the search a command prompt style window appears and then quickly dissapears...

I don't know if this is the correct way to do it; but I ran cmd as admin and entered chkdsk... it said: The type of the file system is NTFS.

(EDIT) Okay, it is running the chkdsk now.

find cmd. right click and run as administrator. then you can run chkdsk.

Will the scan be nagatively affected? if it says:

WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Runnin CHKDSK in read-only mode.

Here - this is an easier way to run chkdsk...

Thanks for the help... after completing the 'chkdsk', my computer seems to be back to normal. I really appreciate your efforts in helping solve my issue. (BTW, I paid attention to your signature, )
