VISTA hangs or stalls in First Screen

Ihave read all the posts in as many threads as i can find related to this issue and they seem to identify the utility chkdsk problems of some sort. I think my problem is not related to that and happens during the initial splash screen with the Toshiba/AMD on it with the solid bar that used to speed across the screen that now hangs, stalls or whatever at a point beyond half way. It can stay there for minutes and I dont know why. I have checked all the logs, events and the like and find no issues the diagnostics from toshiba and micro both come out fine. i use the couple of aftermarket utilities as well to find no problem but it does take loads of time. If it did it all the time I would wonder but this will zip across and move on to the next screen with the moving lights microsoft screen some times. It used to be the other way round; stall infrequently. I dont know what would be a worthwhile use of time to fix this if it needs to be fixed. It will take maybe 2 or 3 re boots to get all the icons to line up in the tray as well after one of these protracted boot up experiences. I dont know what to eliminate or bring back to the start up lineup. If I go the safe mode, it , of course, loads up like a jet. Something is going on there but I dont know what it is and would like any information someone with more experience and wisdom than I have can provide. and a fix if need be.
thanks again

In safe mode run sfc /scannow at an elevated command prompt. Also do a full system scan with MalwareBytes and SuperAntispyware. Then use driver cleaner after you uninstall your graphics driver. Then install a new fresh updated copy. Do all of this in safe mode. Its a start.

Thanks for that tip, however there didnt seem to be any issues but yet it still just stalls at that first splash screen with the brand name prior to the flashing light screen. All functions well afterward when it does finally get it together, though some of the icons do not make it to the tray they seem to be running. I dont get it. I wish I knew what else it could be or track it down. eg: bad fonts, corrupt video, (I just updated the BIOS to 1.90 for this on the toshiba download page. I thought it might test or help/hurt but no changes in the time it takes. After a couple of back to back re boots, it will zip through that process. I dont know if drivers are in a bad order. some take too long to load and jam up the fast ones and these systems are so time consuming to track things down so few things are named and have the code names I get seriously lost and worried about just disabling things willy nilly.
Thanks again though

John

Is there anything in event viewer (type event viewer in search). go to windows log > applications (and system) and look for errors. If there seems to be a series of them right after a boot could you get the event id and source and tell us what there are.

thanks

Ken

I checked the event log, forgot to add that. there was nothing there at all no errors. I looked at the last one and there was an event 5051 associated with the mcafee Mcshield and Mclog and it noted the long time it took there over 10mins but mostly there are no errors at all with the reboots. i look at the time the restart started then when it seems finished. I do get event 1530 user profile and the registry is still going 2 of them back to back but only a warning level. 4625 id event system is suppressing duplicate log entries fro 86400 seconds suppression time out. looks to be in the middle of a boot up sequence. there are no yellow or red signs in these areas though. i stumbled on that just clicking through the information things most of which just say that whatever it is loaded or was found ok. there was another bonjour with a 1 event number and apple ipod event with no number saying they could not be found but they are there and when i check them they are there.
I am rather new with these and have looked through this all before and if there weren't any red or yellow warnings i left it alone. and i do the boot up and see no error and still it takes almost forever to pass the initial screen with the toshiba/amd/phoenix logos on it. to respond to your question exactly there are other things that seem to come up all the time around a restart but all are just info, and as i noted, just say something is there or validated, licenses and such, I have checked them all and they seemed normal , except for the ones i noted.

I am thinking it is a driver or it may be the mcafee suite but I play no games at all and couldnt find which program in may be. I tried some and didnt find an issue. I reloaded some things i have just because they could have been. cloneit and anydvd i just uninstalled and reinstalled. still takes some time to boot only at that first spot. all else goes in there well. Maybe I am missing one of the things I dont see or hidden, but i have the autorun and i got process explorer as well to try to identify just which driver is out of whack. I guess i have to start again but it can eat up so many hours so quickly it seems that i just endure the long boot for a time longer since it does boot eventually. I am getting the windows7 or i paid early at the 50% or $50 so in oct i guess i will get it and maybe by christmas i will be ready to change maybe.
I jsut went through my list of drivers at autorun to see which ones might be attached to which potential offender to avoid having to do a grouping or sequence in order to track this down
thank you for the input anyway. i checked out the clean boot process and will go at it a little later when i get done with work.

I was able to fix the issue and it was a program running as soon as the boot process began. I only guessed to find it. I had no idea it would start itself there even if I knew it checked itself to load at start up. I unchecked it and now the thing boots up just fine and flys through that first screen. Being new to these I have no idea what goes on during that first event what kinds of stuff doing whatever. The program had no business being there and no need to be there and it slowed up the whole rest of the boot process and caused other little conflicts. the program is one of the multi app computer maintenance , tune up everything freeware that works ok but can be opened as needed and not booted up at the start. Advanced System Care 3 not to be confused with other advanced system freeware tools. While there are so many components to this particular utility bundle composed of over a dozen parts I did not see the check box in one of the many preference screens that said to load it at start up, and if i had I never would have thought it would be at that early a point thought it would have loaded after vista or after the welcome screen. I resolved my situation and was able to trim off a number of items that also didnt need to be among the start up list.

As for tune up utilties, advanced system care can clean up your internet tracks among other things at boot up. I would recommedn glary utilities for a great freeware cleaner. Just ignore the memory optimizer.

I suppose I forgot to give credit where due: to those who took the time to share their experience with me. It was essential to the ultimate fix
thanks again. I just got lucky and found it quickly but not with out a good deal of angst that was mollified and assuaged by the concise instructions passed along to me by the sage bulwarks of the forum good enough to share their wisdom and sagacity thanks
