Frozen Desktop

Clockwork

New Member
Hi
Looked on this site yesterday as I had frozen icons on my desktop, very helpful advice to go to taskmanager and end process. Since then I have not been able to send and recieve emails, does anyone know if this is something to do with the frozen icon situation?

Hi and welcome to vistax64.

the frozen icons (and probably the other problem as well) are symptomatic of a deeper problem.

To find out what it is we need you to fill out your system specs (lower left corner of your posts) so that we know what kind of hardware you have.

then type event viewer in search and go to the windows log > application tab. Look for lines with red "X" in the left hand column. these are errors. look for the most comman reason and let us know what it is

thanks

Ken

Hi Ken
I am really sorry but I think I am going to sound really dumb now, where am I typing in event viewer? The error that comes up on my emails when I try to send and receive is Ox8004210B - does that help?

Did you reboot your computer after killing processes (for email problem)? What video card came with your Dell Vostro? Do you have SP2 installed? Did this problem suddenly occur? Did you do anything prior to desktop freezing (install drivers, software, other)?

This refers to SMTP - which stand for Simple Mail Transport Protocol.
Anyhow, let's try this...
- Disable your firewall (temporarily) to see if email can get through.
- Start a command prompt (administrator). Type the following:
Telnet <incoming-mail-server-name> 110

Is the connection successful?

- Repeat above steps and type the following command instead:
Telnet <outgoing-mail-server-name> 25

Is the connection successful?

Are you running Outlook or another email program?

My killing process was for the frozen icons not the email problem, the email problem occured after the Icon problem. I did not install any software or drivers prior and yes the problem suddenly occured. Not sure what video card came with the Dell and sorry don't know what SP2 is?

Right-click the Desktop, click Personalize, and then click Display Settings. You should see your video card information there. Please let us know make and model.

SP2 is service pack 2. To tell if it's been installed, please do the following:

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Type Winver in the search field and press enter
  3. Inspect the build number
Build number 6000 is the original release of Vista. Build number 6001 indicates that SP1 is installed, and build number 6002 indicates that Vista SP2 has been installed.
