Hello,

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/212412-registry-backup-restore.html

I have literally EXACTLY the same problem as "Simon" had in the thread mentioned above. Identical. I even caused it by doing the same thing -switching off my pc when it was copying files from one hdd to another.

Basically, I was just hoping someone could clarify what im meant to do to restore a backed up registry as i had one backed up by itself, but i think I am typing something in wrong in cmd.exe on the vista install cd for repairing.

My registry backup is called "file1" and is in D:\file1.reg
Could someone please confirm the exact command i should type in pls to restore the registry file to my Vista partition D? I have xp on the other partition if it helps...could i restore it from within the xp environment for vista on another partition?

Many thanks.

The best method is system backup and system restore. If you just backed up the registry, you would double click on the registry to import it to your current one (if that is your purpose).

I hope you are doing it from the recovery environment and not directly from the desktop.
The command for you is:
regedit /s D:\file1.reg

Hi ,

First , you need to get to the right drive. It might not be D as seen by Windows Recovery Environment.

To find out type:

X:\sources>DISKPART

Diskpart>LIS VOL

( make a note of the letter for your Vista partition )

Diskpart>EXI

leaving diskpart

( assuming it is D: - if not use the correct drive letter instead)

X:\Sources>D:

D:>regedit /s D:\file1.reg

Make sure you change to D: directory in the cmd prompt as above.
