Delay in Startup - Black Screen & Mouse Pointer

Hello,

My girlfriend has recently (August 09) purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 edition pre-installed.

Everything was absolutely fine for a week or so, but now whenever the computer starts up, it goes through the welcome screen etc in normal time, then the screen goes black with a mouse pointer (which one can move freely), for about 1 - 2 minutes.

After these few minutes, the desktop loads perfectly fine. It would be okay, but it's a really new laptop and it's a little bit annoying. I've tried everything I can think of to sort it out, but I'm getting sick of it, so I need some help.

Here's a list of what I've tried:

  • Had a play with services.msc (I'm not an idiot, I know what I'm doing).
  • Had a play with the msconfig startup services to remove AVG watchdog.
  • Tried to load 'last known good configuration'.
  • Tried some bootup stuff.
  • Installed some original Dell software which I had removed.
There's still nothing and I'm starting to stress out. My girlfriend is at university now, and she's patient but it's not really fair on her to have to wait too long for her laptop to startup, because it's an amazing laptop!

Here are the specifications:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition (Service Pack 1)
  • Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU T4200 (2.0GHz)
  • 4Gb DDR2 RAM
  • ATi Mobility Radeon HD4570 (512mb Dedicated)

traxtor

maybe video driver, screensaver, something in power config,

does it do the same in safe mode?

You might want to check event viewer to see if there is anything listed about the problem. check windows log, application and system.

You could reboot with logging enabled, then check the log

hope this helps

One thing to check - Vista does pause to check for connected video devices just after log-in - check that the laptop isn't set up to drive an external monitor as well as the built-in screen

Another thing that can cause this sort of delay is a mapped network drive that is not available - this is probably the biggest cause of this type of delay

Thank you for all of your replies, it really is a massive help.

zigzag:
I didn't think of that, I'll update her video drivers when I see her this weekend.

She doesn't have a screensaver running and the power configurations are all fine.

I don't think the problem occurs in safe mode, though I'll have to get back to you on this one when I visit her this weekend, she's off at university now so it's difficult to answer your questions fully.

I'll turn the event viewer on next time I see her to see what's happening.

barman:
I never knew that, I'll have to have a look to see if she has it set up... She does have 2 or 3 different inputs for video devices, so I could see why it would take a little longer, though surely if that happened, I wouldn't be able to see the pointer on the monitor??

Frostmourne:
As above, I'll update the drivers.

I have the MiniDump files if that's a help to anyone at all? They're attached to this reply.

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:

Install SP2 too. Then run a memory diagnostic. This was a memory violation as evidenced by the bigcheck strike of 07xE.

Hi all, I’d like your help with a problem. Every morning I turn my laptop on, log on to our family account on the blue screen, then it takes a lot of time to load. Here is the problem: once the loading is over after logging on, sometimes it freezes on a black screen with a moveable cursor. Otherwise my desktop does appear with the wallpaper but it all freezes during the loading of the lower right-hand side icons with a moveable cursor. I can wait for a maximum of 15 minutes, then my patience runs out. In either case I’m able to press Ctrl + Alt + Del which leads to a typical blue Vista screen with five options + Cancel. When I select Start Task Manager on that screen, it all goes black and the Task Manager never appears. In either situation, the only choice I have is to retype Ctrl + Alt + Del to bring up the blue screen and click the red power logo in the lower right-hand side and select Restart. If that gives me nothing after 15 minutes, I press and hold the power button for 5 seconds and it shuts down.

Here is the interesting part, when I repeat the process and log on the second or third time, then finally I’m able to have a fully working computer and I can carry on but these days the service is slow. Please don’t tell me that my computer finally works and learn to live with that. The reason I am asking for help is that in case the problem gets worse, and Microsoft and all Vista forums stop supporting Vista owners, I’ll be left helpless. So I wanna avoid that.

It has been like this since December or November of 2013. Here are three events that happened during this time that might help explain that problem (all three events happened within a two week period, I forgot the order):

1) I tried to speed up my pc by following these two videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPklALA0SMk , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWF8FhwzjZk

2) I installed Service Packs 1 and 2 (including almost 200 Windows Updates that followed)

3)
I installed Avast! Premium (without paying) by following this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOYGG9BquLk

So far I have run the “sfc /scannow” , full system scan with Avast! and full system scan with Malwarebytes, but no luck. I don’t even know the name of this problem to be able to do any research about it or find a solution online. Someone wrote that you clean the Processes in the Windows Task Manager, but I don’t know which Process is actually a virus, so can anyone bring me the full list of viruses that hide in the Task Manager? I’ll do the rest from there. Or better yet, can someone find me the appropriate step by step tutorial on YouTube? I’ll just follow that solution. I don’t know what to do, I feel so hopeless because I’m a complete computer noob. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi Spacecon, thanks for noticing my comment and taking the time to respond (no one else bothered to pay any attention). So I'm taking your advice about starting a new thread; problem is that I don't know how to start a new thread. I clicked on 'tutorials' above and then in the search bar typed "start a new thread" under the many icons, but didn't get the result I was looking for.So can you please start one for me titled "Lazy startup, black screen after log on". I'd appreciate that a lot man. By the way, how were you informed that someone posted a comment on this lost and forgotten thread?

My Computer

Hi Kauser, getting started can be a little tricky. If you click on the tutorials section at the top and select "general tips" it will bring up a list of tutorials. The first one listed is a welcome to the forums tutorial that will explain how to post a new thread. Basically to post, you go to the home page and next click on the category you want, for example "general discussion" and there will be a button near the top to post a new thread. Sorry, I can't post for you, or I would be the one getting the responses instead of you. When you post, it will automatically subscribe you to the thread, which means it will send a notice to your email any time someone posts a response. People here are generally very good about helping others and responding fairly quickly. I think yours just got lost because of the old thread. I just happened to see that you had a post that had not been responded to in a day, so I thought I would check it out. Can't even say for sure how I got there. Good luck!
