Hello,

My vista machine randomly keeps crashing since few days. I haven't installed anything that i could remmeber.

I have attached 2 mini dumps of recent crashes, all i can learn from these is that it's caused due to win2k.sys . I tried renaming the file so windows may put a new one just incase it is messed but windows doesn't let me.

Can anyone guide me what to do ?

Thanks

Could you post a picture of your page file set up?

type 'sysdm.cpl' in the start search then hit enter > accept the UAC > Click on the 'Advanced' tabe > go down to 'Virtual memory' and click 'Change' > post a screen shot of that window, please. It should look like this, just with your settings:

Btw, I just looked at a post here and did a scan of files via

sfc /scannow and got

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Okay, now type this into a command prompt: findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >>%userprofile%\desktop\sfcdetails.txt

That will save a readable text file of the sfc scan. Please post that here.

The only errors in the log point to: Intel_Processor_Architecture.

Hmm, when did this start happening? What were you doing when it happened?

This is a laptop, even if i leave it doing nothing this happens sometimes. It started happening couple of days ago. The only thing i downloaded and installed was a cracked password cracker for rar files that had virus which was picked up by my antivirus. So i delete that .

Ok, thats not a big deal.

I just re-read the dump and I missed something. It said: Invalid system memory was referenced. So.

Please go to start search > type MdSched.exe > hit enter > accept the UAC > then choose the option to reboot and check now.

This will check your memory or 'RAM' for any errors and it will tell you how many errors, if any, it finds. This process will take some time to complete, in which, you cannot use the computer. When its finished please post back the results. Thanks :)

You will have to jot down notes  pretty much all I need to know is if it finds any errors in the memory. So if you can just post back with whether or not it found any errors that would be great :)

before we can troubleshoot this properly you rreally need to update to service pack 2 and install all the latest drivers for all your hardware (they are a bit outta date ;) ) , it may simply be a driver issue until thats been ruled out were fightin in the dark :p

Good point, I always forget to check for SP2..

What laptop are you running, brand and model? Stamped on the bottom by the battery somewhere, I'll look up the most recent drivers for you.

SP2 might fix it, but the dump specifies memory faults. Heck, the hard drive might even be going. Looks like both network drivers are 2 to 3 years old, sound driver is 3 years old, also looks like a firewire driver is about 3 years old.
