Solved Safely remove USB thumb drive

Before I remove a USB thumb drive, I click the green check from notification area; I click the message that appears next to the green check, Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - drives (F:, G:); then a dialog box appears that states, This device can now be safely removed from computer.

The light on the thumb drive, however, stays lighted. I previously followed a procedure where the light would go off on the thumb drive when I did a Safely Remove.

Should the light on the thumb drive go off before it can be safely removed? If so, how do I get the thumdrive light to go off?

Thank you.

the most important thing abt removing USB devices. they need to finish writing data and spin down. thats when the OS says its safe to remove. SOme usb devices have lights that go off when that is done others dont. I wouldn't be worried about the light staying on. If you are still woried there is an application called safely remove that will handle anything you want it to. Plus the app names the devices and keeps track of their condition. they are giving away 10000 free licenses so you may even get it for free,

Hello Moosescooter,

I have noticed that it varies between USB devices with the light staying on or not. As long as the light is not flashing and you are not currently saving or copying anything to or from the USB device, then it will be safe to remove it when it says it is ok to. :)

It would be nice if USB drives turned the light off after umount, but that's not the case...

That depends on the drive.
