Help! ): The flashing line that indicates where I am typing moves to random places!

How do I fix it? D:
We have two Sony Vaio laptops in my house and this has happened with both of them. When I type the little flashing line moves to random places and the typing continues from there. Not only that, sometimes when I type passages get highlighted or deleted, or the page simply changes for no reason. Why did this happen and how can i fix it? D:

I posted this on Yahoo Answers and the response was
"
this is common and one of the reasons people hate vista, however its easy to fix.

go to control panel >mouse and other (or printers and other) >Mouse > Touchpad Tab >move the slider back a bit so its not so sensitive.

When the Touchpad is super sensitive weird things happen when your hands are nearby.

But I don't have a touchpad tab option that allows me to do that. Please help me fix it, it's getting impossible to type at a decent speed.

EDIT: Sorry for lack of specific information. I checked my model, and it is Vaio PCG-7173L. The only options on the "Mouse" section of the Control Panel is Buttons, Pointers, Pointer Options, Wheel, and Hardware (Alps Pointing-device for Vaio). I have tried adjusting the pointer speed but it hasn't helped. Thank you again. (:

Does this happen in all programs you can type in, or just one specific one?

Go in to the mouse via control panel and uncheck the box by web assistant

Re: Help! ): The flashing line that indicates where I am typing moves to random place

It is the Alps Pointing-device for Vaio. D: Well, that's the hardware. I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong informationnn haha.

And this happens literally EVERYWHERE. It already happened once in this response. It happens when I use open office, facebook, notepad, use the search bar on my web browser; anything, basically. Any fix? ): I thought I could just wait it out but it's been going on for way too long.

Re: Help! ): The flashing line that indicates where I am typing moves to random place

On the back of my laptop it says that the model is PCG-7173L, and it is the NW line from what I can tell.

Wow. This is an older notebook and the latest OS option for drivers is NT. Not even XP.
I'm amazed it's running Vista!

I was going to have you install the latest driver for your touchpad.
How about using an external mouse as a test?

Re: Help! ): The flashing line that indicates where I am typing moves to random place

o.o No nooo. It's not an old model, I just bought it brand new in July and it came equipped with Vista. It's PCG-7173L, not 717.
Could it really be a touchpad problem? Because it happens while I'm typing and not touching the touchpad at all...

Re: Help! ): The flashing line that indicates where I am typing moves to random place

This does sound like a touchpad problem to me. Is there a button on the laptop to turn off the touchpad. Alternativly as a workaround go into device manager and disable it, as a diagnostic test to see if it helps.

Okay - mea culpa.

The latest driver for the pointing device is 7.202.505.12 with a date of 6/8/2009. If you do not have the latest, greatest driver, I would recommend updating. And might as well grab any other drivers or bios that is newer.

Sony eSupport - VGN-NW100 - Software Updates & Drivers

Your system is the VGN-NW100 series, which is equivalent to PCG-7173L.
