reoccurring problem with this computer.

After 3hrs or so, this is how it looks. I got it fixed by Dell customer service before but since I'm out of warranty, its gonna cost me. It was a pretty simple fix too, that why I'm holding out on paying $100 for a 20sec fix. I'm thinking it has something to do with the graphic card, can anyone help me? I hate having to restart when I'm in the middle of something.

Whats the computer specs? Are you using a video card? What driver are you using? Have you updated the driver?

How many tasks are currently running when that occurs?

Either its a bad video driver, or your running too many processes for your ram and cpu to hold on efficiently.

My cpu is pretty stock other than the ram upgrade I did but ever since I ordered my laptop from Dell, first day gave me this problem.

Ive noticed that when I run my music program that pulls a lot of power, it happens quicker. there has been instances where had nothing running and it happen. I know MS CS fixed it once but I was forced to reboot and this problem came back.

can't restore active desktop - MajorGeeks Support Forums

If not I'll look more later pz.It sounds like a XP tip but it might work on Vista ? I forget the name of the software I saw wandering around on google grr.

Ahh I love google I think this is it and I've never got a bad dl from them :

I would definitely kill any processes you aren't using. Like sidebar, itunes, bonjour, windows media player, etc.

If that doesn't help, then I would try the vid driver..

What concerns me is this problem happened before. Since this happened under warranty, I wonder if you could contact Dell and ask what service was performed on your pc. You're asking for old information, not new.

Also, why would this happen again? Is it a hardware issue? Something you're installing?

If you could convince Dell to give you this info, it would be very helpful. Unless, of course, they just blew out your OS and reinstalled it.

I wanted to clear my hard drive entirely, so I deleted everything and use the disk to reboot and start fresh. The music program that I use, uses a lot of power making the problem happen much much quicker, so I figure it happens whenever my laptop gets real hot. I wasn't home yesterday to give the desktop hijack a fair try, but I will leave it on all night and run my music program to see if its fixed!

Thanks a lot guys

Ok, it just reappeared its ugly head. IIRC, the guy right clicked on my background after downloading something and it was fixed. Last time I tried calling MS, they wouldnt tell me what it was until I re-upped or pay a fee

My Computer

So you re-installed Vista and it still does it? Or what do you mean by boot from the disk? Have you installed the latest video drivers?

Sounds like its a video driver issue, this is a laptop you said right? Try blowing out the vents in the case and make sure there isn't any dust or build-up that would cause a heat accumulation.
