Solved Stupid RAM Problem!!

Hey. I registered here yesterday and I have to ask you this! I am sick of trying to fix it and I don't know how.

My specs:
Vista Home Premium x64
Dell XPS 435T
i7 950 @3.07 GHz
RAM: 8 GB

The Problem: In my system specs for Windows it clearly says: 8GB ram
In the task manager when I check my physical memory it states:
Total: 2038 MB! wtf. This is really annoying. I have set my pagefile to 10gb and in the task manager it says 10gb so that one is correct. But what is up with this RAM problem? I don't get it? Am I missing something here? Please tell me. Cause My physical memory is always above 50% even when I don't do anything on the computer, really annoying, when I know I have 8GB installed...please help..

Hello Hawkin, and welcome to Vista Forums.

In "msconfig.exe" under the boot tab, click on Advanced options, then make sure that the Maximum memory box is unchecked.

Also check your BIOS settings to make sure that "Memory mapping" is enabled.

If it is, then you may need to update your motherboard's BIOS to the latest version.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

If you have 8 gigs of ram you can certainly use a much smaller page file as you probably are not even using any. can you take a screenshot of the task manager performance tab with the built in snipping tool (type snipping tool in search) and upload it to us?

As Brink said, you need memory remapping and let Vista manage the page file. Finally does your motherboard support that much RAM?

Brink: Yes That one is unchecked. How to access memory mapping settings?

I have attached a screenshot of the task manager. I am Norwegian but I don't think it will be hard to understand what's what. Just compare to your own manager.

I presume my motherboard supports 8gb ram as it was build for it...why would dell include a motherboard that doesn't support it?

Hawkin,

You would access the "Memory mapping" settings by booting into your BIOS and changing it there. You usually keep tapping something like the F2 or Delete key during boot to enter BIOS. It should say during startup what key to press for a couple of brief seconds.

Filling out your system specs can further help us see what your motherboard supports and to look up BIOS information for you. ;)

Okey. I have checked there before and I found no settings for memory mapping, but maybe I missed it, though I doubt it.
Here are all 5 screens from cpuz, most of my specs are here.

I never really understood the advanced part of msconfig. In that Boot Advanced Options it says Number of processors:

I have a quad core should I enter 4 ? Ah nm I googled it and it sent me here where I found the answer :)

Zigzag is that in the Boot / advanced section I only see Number of processors: which I set to 4 and Max memory which is set to 0 ,I don't see the others you mentioned where are they located.

Thx , Bryan

I would show you but my bios doesn't have it. in any case you want to leave max mem, and max cpu, unchecked. If you set a number in max memory of 0 (zero) you may not be able to boot.

Okey. Getting pissed off here. Updated to the newest BIOS. Still no sign of my RAM in BIOS. What is this? Still says in BIOS settings: Memory Installed: 2048 MB..
How can windows detect 8GB then? I Know I have 8GB RAM, my motherboard and BIOS supports it, but for some reason it just don't work..

Could it be anything wroing inside the computer? RAM has slipped out or something??

it could be anything. My hunch is still that something is set incorrectly in BIOS. One last time is max memory checked or unchecked?

It is unchecked! :(

I just checked inside my cpu and the RAM is placed just as it should be. I don't get this. Any help would be great. Actually I can't understand how I am able to run Fallout 3 with ultra graphics and no lags with only 2GB ram and only pagefile... Frustrating not knowing what's wrong here.
