Problematic Computer

I need help with my problematic computer. I used to be able to play call of duty 4 with recommended settings for a few months but after a while my monitor would go blank on me but my computer and game would still be running I know this because I could still hear what was going on. After waiting for a minute or so everything would go back to normal. I thought it was the graphics card so I checked the temperature using many programs such as HWMonitor, SpeedFan and GPU-Z and they all said my graphics card was around 100°C which apparently is bad... So I ripped off the sides of my computer tower and put a mini desk fan next to the graphics card and managed to lower the card to around 56°C. My 2nd problem is a bit more complicated. I used to be able to put the computer to sleep and wake it up just fine. But now if I put the computer to sleep and wake it up, my monitor, keyboard, and mouse don’t work. The monitor goes into standby, the mouse and keyboard lights don’t even come on and the only way to get them all working is to hold the power button for 5 seconds and shut down the computer and start it back up again. This is where the 3rd problem comes in. After doing all that and managing to get to the desktop, the video driver always reinstalls itself and I have to restart and things go back to normal until it’s time to put the computer to sleep, then it’s back to square one with the unresponsive monitor, mouse and keyboard. Even shutting down the computer and starting it up again instead of using sleep creates the same problem. PLEASE, if anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. And sorry for the long post, I just didn’t want to leave out any information.

-my level of experience with computers is so-so, I can get into the registry if needed

I guess I can try service pack 2 and see what happens.

And Zigzag3143, I'm not overclocking, my original temperature was 100c but with the desk fan it's around 56c. The version of vista I'm using is windows vista home premium 32-bit operating system X86-based PC.

Thanks Drydazz

problem 1-- heat cpu, gpu, etc. Resolved for now. suspect hot video card caused frame rate drop, etc

problem 2- Wake from sleep/hibernate there are known problems between certain combo's of hardware and os. might be resolved by upgrading to SP2. also if using auto hide taskbar stop there is a known problem

problem 3-- video driver re-installation is this the driver vista installs or one that you found and have to put back in after every sleep/wake cycle?

All three problems might be video related. It doesn't feel that way Im thining you have 2 basic problems video and sleep/wake

sleep wake might be related to the power configuration. whats the plan settings.

video what driver are you using and is it installed correctly when viewed in device manager (type device manager in search) goto display tab. is there a yellow triangle on the driver or is it not there. whats the driver version?

Hope this helps

Ken

theog, I’m using a desk fan not a case fan but I did make sure and blow all the dust out of the case using a gas duster.

zigzag3143,

I’m not using auto hide taskbar.

Vista automatically reinstalls the video driver for me then asks to restart; I’m assuming it’s installing the last driver I installed which is the Nvidia 8.16.11.9062 17/08/2009 because when I check the driver properties that's what it gives me.

The power plan that I have is the “recommended settings”.

And there are no yellow triangles anywhere in the device manager.
Thanks
