USB ports have stopped working - partially

I'm really puzzled with this one: Vista shows neither my digital camera or my MP3 player plugged into my USB ports. However, my HP thumb drive shows up fine in the same ports in the front of my machine. Why would a static memory drive work fine but two capture and playback devices Not work?

Any thoughts? Thanks for any help.

Please plug in the digital camera and the MP3 player.
Then check Device Manager to see what it has to say about the 2 devices.
To get to Device Manager, go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Let us know if the devices are detected.
Let us know if they have any problems (red x's or yellow !'s)
Let us know if there are any unknown devices.

My Computer

I did as you suggested and found that yes, the two portable devices are indeed recognized in Device Manager and do not show any colored x's or symbols, they are working ok.

But this message came up in properties:"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

So I take it the registry is messed up somehow. How could that happen when I haven't made any mods or changes?

That link makes some sense but still doesn't fix the issue all together. This happens to me a lot with Win 7. I figure that some IRQs get conflicted and unplugging and plugging them back clears the issue.

Now, some of the big USB peripherals still need to be plugged in the back of the PC and not the front, at least, in the case of my 320Gb passport. why does this happens, I don't know, I just know it is the only way to make them work.

I've tried the unplug/plug routine and it didn't help. I've downloaded new drivers for the camera yesterday and that didn't help....but I hadn't unloaded the existing drivers before doing that.

I'm guessing my only next step is to unload the drivers for both portable devices and then reload them from the web to see if that makes any difference.

What a pain in the ..... I had uses for both today and can't access them.

- make sure latest bios is installed
- try your idea with uninstalling the existing driver
- rename C:\windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 to infcache.old

Thanks Lemur. I can't find a file named INFCACHE.1; I"m in the process of reloading new drivers now.

Well, all's well that ends well as the famous playwrite once said. I would add "hopefully".

When I deleted the camera files and reloaded them suddenly the MP3 player showed up working! Then the camera showed up and all was working again. (?)

Another mystery? Perhaps there was a conflict between the two drivers somehow. I'm suspecting that a Vista update changed the Registry landscape somehow.

Many thanks to all of you who contributed good thinking and questions!:D

3rd party drivers often cause issues (more so than most anything except for viruses).
In particular they're more likely to cause problems than the USB controller itself
