The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: i8042prt

Sorry if this has already been answered/wrong place. I looked at Google but thought I double check here (since the solutions via Google seem to be refering to a different OS to mine)

First of: Windows Vista, SP2, 64 bit.

Now sometimes (and not now since I am writing this) my Keyboard/Mouse just stops working. It freezes completely and I am unable to use it and am hence required to restart the computer. This happens at random occasions but it usually involves opening some program or what not (I noticed a prominent pattern that the mouse/keyboard freezes whenever I go to speedtest.com measure my speed and then once the download speed bar is finished and upload is about to begin my computer freezes).

I had a look at my event viewer and noticed this:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    i8042prt

Now I am not sure whether this appears at the start and then once I run a program or do something (like go on speedtest.com) the commuter then freezes (i.e. my mouse/keyboard is non-responsive) or the error message comes up after my computer freezes but any help in fixing this mouse/keyboard freezing would be very grateful.

The solution to fixing this problem I founds was to go to Registry editor and change the Start D word from 1 to 4 (but I noticed some saying to delete it completely and yet other sources to change it from 1 to 0 and yet even others to change something that I don't even have under that folder). If I was to tamper with the reg information, is it possible that I wont ever get access to my keyboard/mouse? My worry is that I might change some value so that I will have no way of getting to the computer with the keyboard/mouse (I am not good with bios) and would not be able to get help on the internet since I can't connect!

So if I can get specific instructions for my system in how to fix this keyboard/mouse issue that would be much appreciated.

Also... if you think the freezes might be the cause of something else please feel free to suggest. Friends have told me that it might even have to do with software that is not 64 bit/vista compatible might be stuffing up when running in the background (I followed this advice and went on to remove norton, superantispyware and ulead from my system) but I am not sure what else there could be to remove.

Cheers and sorry for the long post.

    It is bad idea

DWORD Start may have following values

0 -boot ,1 -system ,2- auto ,3 -demand, 4 -disabled. Surly if you'll set to 4 you lose access to keyboard and mouse.Don't modify anything.Find folder C:\Windows\Minidump pack it and attache to post.If Minidump folder is empty use verifier tool to diagnose wrong drivers read here:Vista Freezing

I had a look at the minidump folder just now and it appears to be empty :s (I used crap cleaner a few days earlier thinking that after using it might solve the freezing issues). Would crap cleaner have a text file perhaps of all the things it removed?*

*Edit: Assuming crapcleaner even had something to do with minidump being empty and it wasn't like that to begin with.

Ah will do. I will have to save everything first right because this will lead to the freeze/crash to occur right?

    Yes

Ok so I did exactly as those settings have said except there was a problem:

My computer did not freeze/crash! I restarted after enabling those settings and my computer came back as per normal. The only thing I noticed was that I was unable to connect to the internet... while everything else I was still able to do and there was no freezes (although it did seem a bit slower... might just be my imagination though)... so I then restarted again then I run comand prompt and did verifier/reset and then restarted the comp and was again able to connect to the internet... sadly though nothing on the minidump :s

    edit:

However I did have a look at the event viewer and noticed this come up as an error message:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMaker.Exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\WLMFDS.DLL" on line 8. Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested. Reference is WLMFDS,processorArchitecture="AMD64",type="win32",version="1.0.0.1". Definition is WLMFDS,processorArchitecture="x86",type="win32",version="1.0.0.1". Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

    edit2: and these:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped.

Sometimes even verifier tool can't lead to BSOD .Update BIOS and drivers for chipset and will see...

I probably should have realized this earlier but I have SP2 (service pack 2!) and after I ran that script my computer froze (after it gave me an error message of sorts)... So I am not sure if the script is relevant considering I am currently on SP2 ....

But yeah I guess I should look into getting my BIOS/chipset stuff updated before I do anything else.

I rather suspect any errors in this script.I saw cases when this script return errors even on systems with SP1.You can try this:

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right clik on this file as admin)
    and type

    winmgmt /resetrepository

    +restart

Sometimes it help in this issue as well
