Can't start normally, get a funny bluescreen

So I was playing games and randomly in the middle, my screen was suddenly distorted and my entire computer crashed, and since then, after years of reliable use, my computer will not restart normally, and even after start up repairs, reinstalling the OS and drivers, I can't start up my computer without safemode.
Here is the problem I've gotten last:

Also, I checked my Problem Reports, and I saw this about 20 times listed on there, all with the same info.

I think it's my video hardware, because of the 2nd report I posted.
My system is:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz Processor
3326 MB ram
Vista Home Premium 32bit OS.

Any additional info needed and I'll give you what I can. I'm not sure how I would access my drivers info in safemode, which is the only way I can access the internet from the computer, so I can't tell if all are updated, but I'm sure they are.

Also, I'm not too advanced with computers, only gaming, so any step by step instructions would be appreciated.

Hopefully anyone here can help me locate the problem. I would really like to be able to use my computer again. :(
Thanks in advance for any help given.

dxgkrnl.sys is the Microsoft Vista SP1 DirectX Graphics Kernel system driver. This is a possible source of the problem.

Do you have SP2 on Vista?
Do you have the latest video driver?
Take a look at device manager and see if there is an error - especially for video.

Not sure about SP2. This computer was originally my brothers, and I was given it after he was unable to use it anymore. I'm asking him now about it.
EDIT: No answer about SP2, though I can download it if its needed.

Yes, my video driver is fully upgraded.
I should point out that, right now, my screen has yellow transparent lines going down the entire screen unless it is in 800x600 resolution, but in safemode, I can't seem to change that.
Also I'm not sure of as to how to access my device manager. Again, I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes down to this stuff about my computer, so a way to get to it would be nice.

Like that?

Hey

I have only looked thru the first 5, but several things are immediatelyt apparent. In the first 5 dumps the videio driver failed nvlddmkm.sys. It needs to be un-installed the re-installed with the newest one. I seem to remember this driver had to be uninstalled in a different manner. just google the files name you will find it

Second Im pretty sure you aren't running even SP1 because almost all of the drivers had vreation dates of 2006 and 2007. thats just killing you . Update to sp1, and sp2 if you intend to stay on vista.

Im going to look thru the rest and if any thing turns up I will edit this post with the results

Of the remaining dumps three were the same video driver and three were unreadable/ useless

hope this helps

Ken

First install SP1 (and SP2), then follow the rest of ZigZag's excellent directions. The error I mentioned was directly related to not having installed SP1.

looks good. I'll get on installing the service packs right away then whatever else you wanted me to do. I'll edit if what you said works or not.

Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it.

Edit: SP1 is almost done downloading, then I'll be on to SP2. I'll update my status more once everything is done.

My pleasure. if you follow the instruction for the removal and replave of the video driver that may be all you have to do.

If this doesn't fix it save and upload the dumps

Good Luck

I'm sorry I didn't post sooner. I had to leave for a 2 day trip, but I'm back now.

So I tried installed SP1. My computer goes through the full install, then at the end, tells me The Service Pack didn't install, and its reverting all the changes. I don't know if that means Its already installed or what, but I'm confused as to why it can't.

I'm not sure if this is because every time the computer restarts, it ends up crashing again because it tries to start up normally and then the computer restarts a 2nd time and then continues what its doing when I tell it to start up in safe mode with networking so I can go online for help.

Any ideas? Am I just being stupid with something obvious?

Bump. Any help would be appreciated

I cant think of anything else to do but wipe it and reinstall from scratch. I forget (im working too many threads to remember) if you have a vista dvd, or a restore dvd? Is there anything on the drive that you really need?

I'm new here, but not to IT - 20 years or so now...so I have a handle on stuff like this. All the information you received here is dead-on...BUT, with symptoms like yours - will not accept SPs - you're looking at kernel malfunctions. You could be chasing that for quite a while. You may not want to do this...but...wipe the drive and re-install your OS. If that doesn't do it - take it to a tech.

I'm looking at a wipe at the moment. Nothing on here is essential, but it would be a pain in the ass to get everything I once had.

I DO have all of the CD's I would need to reinstall everything, I'm just not sure as to how to do the wipe. I've never had to do it before, and I'm stupid with this kind of stuff.

I feel your pain. wipes are a PITA, and by the time you get it set back up you probably need another one. I was doing them frequently until I started making Acronis images of the OS. If it crokes and dies I can be back running in under an hour.

If you do end up having to wipe it let us know if you need any help.

I'm checking out the event viewer thing that Frostmourne said to, but could anyone explain the wiping process for me just in case? If I can't figure it out, I wanna be able to get my computer up and running as soon as possible, and if I need to wipe, I'll live with just getting everything I'll need back.

You put the disc in reboot, then delete all your partitions, make new ones and install the OS. I;d go with 7.
