7zip tries to install on boot, cannot find .msi file - help! :D

My father in law is having a problem with his Vista-powered HP laptop.
On boot, the OS loads up just fine, but as part of the startup it tries to install the 7zip application. He must have run *something*??? in the past which has tried to install the application as part of the installer, but he doesn't know what it was...
Anyway; the installer tries to run, but then it cannot find the .msi file it is looking for. It is looking for a temporary folder which no longer exists, so it fails. There is a 7zip installation package with the correct .msi under a different temporary folder, but manually browsing the installer to this .msi does not work.
I've tried installing 7zip with a .msi downloaded from the 7zip website, but the installer still runs on boot.
So... I'd like to stop the installer running but I'm not sure where to look.
Also, I've tried doing a system restore back to a point two weeks ago when he knows the error wasn't there, but it fails for some reason.
Sorry, cannot comment on what he might have done to get into this situation; he says he doesn't know :D

Also... is the Windows Install Cleanup utility likely to be able to fix this (can't try until he gets home from work...)

TIA!

The Cleanup Utility should work...make sure to DLoad it from a reputable site.
It certainly won't hurt things.
