Delay at startup

Although this isn't a major issue, I was wondering if there is an fix here. At startup, once past the BIOS screen and Windows Vista screen, it goes black with just the cursor showing for maybe 75-90 seconds. Then the desktop will appear. I am using Vista Ultimate 32 bit on a Dell D620. Thanks

Actually I followed the advice and lowered the delay to about a minute. It seems the remaining problem is either due to, or exacerbated by a remnant of AVG 8.5. I'm not sure if it's the free one or the paid, because I had both at one time. I am currently using Norton 2010. This remnant is also causing a Windows Security update to not install. I have tried repeatedly to uninstall the AVG from the list of programs, to no avail. If I perform a System Restore to a point before I installed AVG, 1) will it remove it? and 2) will it also remove Norton 2010? What concerns me more than the delay is the inability to install the security update. Thanks.

Have you tried disabling third party security programs(Norton2010) before installing Security Updates? if not, try disabling them and see whether you could install the updates.

Between following the suggestions given and running Advanced System Care, I got the delay at startup reduced by at least 90%. However, that security update just refuses to install. I disabled Norton 2010 and tried to install the update. Didn't work. Since it is marked as a important update, it has me a little concerned.

I found his post, and it solved the issue! The security update installed perfectly after that. I can't thank you enough for the advice. I realize that things that stump me are merely childs play to a majority of the members here. With 6 computers in this house (4 mine and 1 each for my 2 kids), I'll probably be asking quite a few questions over time. Thanks again!
