Solved Clicking sound while scrolling

I have a Sony Vaio VGNNW150 J with a Fujitsu mhz2320bh hard drive.

When I scroll using any web browser there is a faint rapid clicking sound coming from the hard drive area (underneath the touchpad). It is almost like the hard drive is parking the head on and off. I've run SMART tests and everything checks out.

Has anyone had an issue like this?

All drivers and BIOS updates are installed.

Thanks for any help regarding this annoying issue!

Is it only when browsing the internet or does it do it while browsing your files as well?

While scrolling files, and in any programs (OpenOffice, Adobe Reader, ect).

It happens whether I use the keyboard arrow keys, holding down the left trackpad button and scrolling using the trackpad, and using the scroll feature on the trackpad itself.

The hard drive can be working (normal hard drive noise) and the faint "clicking" noise still happens.

Is your page file bing managed by Vista, or did you manually set a figure for it?

start > search > type sysdm.cpl > hit enter > then go to the Advanced tab > Performance settings > advanced tab > at the bottom of that page you'll see a Change... button > click that and what bubble is shaded?

On another note, Sony has a feature on the Vaio called Splashtop, which allows instant access to the web without booting into Windows. When I use that feature, there is no noise when scrolling...meaning I think it's a driver or other issue and not a mechanical issue with the hard drive.

Thanks for helping me out on this one...Sony's support assumes I know nothing about computers. They thought I was talking about the "Start Navigation" Sound.

I had a similar problem with my hardware doing the same noise on scrool and keybord arrows.

I was releted to controlepanel>internetconfiguration>advance>enable or disable the smooth scrool feature

My Computer

Yeah, I tried disabling smooth scrolling on browsers, but it still does it. I'm wondering if it is a motherboard/capacitor issue...but then again, it doesn't do it when I am working within the splashtop browser.

Farfetched idea but does it do it when you use a mouse? IIRC your on a lappy.

Have you booted into safe mode to verify its not a program causing this?

Tested both safe mode and safe mode w/ network. While decreased, it is still there. I'm more and more convinced it's a motherboard interference issue.

I asked a harddrive supporter and he said that some HDD even from the same brand could be more or less noisy when in working mode.

But if that smooth scrool dident work then im out of clues.

My Computer

Makes sense. I run Active Hard Disk Monitor in the background and everything checks out. I'll just leave it as a nuisance.

There is another way to lower the HHD noise. Under controlepanel and administration there is a way to disable some windows aplications that runs pretty much always, and thats why your HHD react more noisy. But unless you dont know what each aplication does then i would not suggest that :D

There is HDD index and some HHD scans of any sorts that runs. But it could make the system unstable or slower. But hey..if you want lower noise then go for it.
