Can't run WINDOWS 7 Upgrade Advisor

"I have 2 computers, both running VISTA HOME PREMIUM. (Laptop since upgraded to WINDOWS 7) In the laptop, which is a wireless connection to the internet, WINDOWS 7 UPGRADE ADVISOR, & Secunia PSI will properly connect to the internet, and scan the machine for out of date software. No problems. (IE8 is the default browser)

However, in my desktop, hard wired to my home network router, Secunia will not connect. Nor will the WINDOWS 7 Upgrade Advisor. I set the rules in IE8 to allow the connection, but all I get is the barber pole saying it could take up to 10 seconds to connect, but it never does. I also set the firewall to allow this connection, in both directions. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled the program, to no avail. Same issue.

I have since upgraded the laptop to WINDOWS 7. (I had no problem running the WINDOWS 7 Upgrade advisor in the laptop.)

The same problem happens when I try to run the WINDOWS 7 Upgrade Advisor on my Desktop. A window pops up saying that an ActiveX control is trying to run. Do you approve of this. I click yes. I press the start scan button, and nothing happens.

Any ideas on this one? "

Have you tried running it with a clean boot?
To do this, go to Start and type in MSCONFIG and press Enter
Go to the Startup tab and uncheck all non-Microsoft things, then reboot and try running the Upgrade Advisor.

I already tried that with advice I received from another forum.

This is a security thing relating to IE & ActiveX. Both the Upgrade Advisor & Secunia Psi are applications running on a remote server, which both require ActiveX. I have already gone through all the security settings in IE8, but no luck.

I'm thinking that I may have to reboot as Administrator. I think that may remove any security related issues. I'll try that over the weekend. (I'm getting sick of this problem)

If that doesn't do it, I'll probably just wind up sticking the WINDOWS 7 disc in, and screw the Advisor.

What's the make and model of the systems?
Here's the basics on what's required: Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows

Do you have any special requirements/programs that you require. Check the Win7 Compatibility Center for that: Windows 7 Compatibility Center home

It's a DELL XPS-410 system. (Running VISTA SP2) Perfectly ok for WINDOWS 7, however I have a ton of peripherals hanging off of it. IE: Bluetooth devices, TV tuners, WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER extender, etc. If I have problems, it will be there.

If you install Windows 7, install it without any of the peripherals.
Then add them one-by-one and monitor for issues.
