DreamScene problem - explorer has stopped working

Hi, new to vistax64!

I have vista x86 sp2. :D
I get 'explorer has stopped working' error when trying to set dreamscene as background.
after that error comes, explorer restarts and my background is still old(without dreamscene).
Please help me, I want dreamscene!

Hi TGG,

Are your video card drivers are up to date?

Aero enabled?

What are your specs? ie CPU and video card

Unfortunately dream scene was a great idea, but is buggy as hell.

Yes, my video card drivers are up to date.
Aero is enabled.
CPU - pentium dual core 3ghz
GPU - ati x1600pro.

What version of explorer do you have? I installed 8 and had nothing but trouble with it. I removed it went back to 7 and have had no issues since.

I believe he is referring to Windows Explorer.

You can probably start by answering the questions I asked earlier ;)

Some of the default themes are 'less taxing' than others. It depends on your PC. Lower end PC's can really struggle with some 'dreams'.

You can also check out stardock's deskcapes.
Stardock.com - Your Edge In Software

It's the same deal as dreamscene, although it's no longer free like it used to be.

Thanks for the specs TGG.

If that is a Pentium D 3.0ghz, then some dreams - especially those with long loops and HD quality (720p,1080p etc), can utilise anywhere between 5% to 80% of your CPU usage just to run a dream.

Regardless of whether that is causing the explorer issue or not, it will definitely slow your whole system down.

As for the explorer crash, I'd temporarily try disabling AERO to see if it has an impact. From memory - The WDDM (Windows Display Desktop Manger) has problems pausing/restarting dreams when applications etc are minimized/maximized.

In conjunction with the 'explorer has stopped working' , have you had any other messages that mention the "display driver atikmdag.sys has stopped working and recovered" ?

No I don't get any other error messages.

Whoops, you're right. I haven't touched DS for well over a year and I got the Aero issue confused with something else. My apologies:o

You could always check the Event Viewer logs to see if it points a patricular file that is causing DS to stop working.

(Start> type "Event" and in the Event Viewer, Custom Views>Administrative Events

Look for the explorer application crash and see if it shows a "Faulting Module Path" usually a .dll or .exe file

I would never have made the connection between codecs and dreamscene....
