Endless re-boot problem

I have a HP s32220n Slim Line Dual Core 32 bit processor desk top computer, operating system is Windows Vista Home Priemium. Yesterday morning when starting the computer it went into a continuous re-boot loop with the following message ("Configuring Udate Stage 3 of 3% complete. Do not shut computer off). I can not access my operating system at all. Have tried to repair it with F8 options but to no avail. The hard drive seems to be ok but can not get by the re-boot issue. The day before I had this issue I did download and install a microsoft update as requested but not sure if this caused the problem. I am hoping there is an easy fix short of re-formating the hard drive and re-installing system software with the recovery disks. Anyone have any idea's to fix this problem.

Have heard of that problem if trying to upgrade but not on an update, but it does appear to be from the update as it is attempting to finish installing the update. If you haven't got it straight yet, reboot into safe mode and roll back to a previous time prior to attempted update.
