Solved Adding Folder Icons

Is there a way I can add icons to the icons I already have to associate files with, like when I click on the properties of the file and customize it to have a folder appearance of my choice, can I add icons to the list I am choosing from? Or are they fixed when windows is installed? Thanks.

There were threads about these but due to them being very old I was prevented from replying to them.

Ok, so u taught me how to create new ones however...I can't imagine making some on paint lol, because, usually when I make a paint file it's...square...it's not 3-d looking and have it's own shape, like those default vista icons which are beautiful.

Is it possible to delete the default icons? Because I feel that some are missing...is this space you see here normal?

Also, I noticed an icon that some of my folders have are not within the list shown in the above picture. This one is not in the list:

I also noticed some folders' icons change when you empty them, like you could have an icon of a folder holding some papers but when you empty it, it will look like a blank folder. As for the one right above, it will remain the same as long as it only has folders and nothing else, so if I put a browser bookmark in it, it will look different. It can only contain folders, even if the folders have things in them.

Is that normal too? Thanks.

The missing icons in the top screenshot are blank icons instead. The bottom image is considered a full folder icon vs a empty folder icon from what you described. This is normal.

If you have a folder with nothing but pictures in them, then you will see something like the examples in the tutorial below instead for the folder icon with a thumbnail preview in it.

Ok, I understand the blank spaces are for blank icons, or no icons basically.

However, is it possible to have it look like that even when I put something in it, that, automatically, changes it's icon? I think that tutorial talks mainly about pictures in folders, but the bottom image had no picture placed inside it. I just put an internet bookmark (which usually have arrows on the corner looking like shortcut icons or something) in that folder, and it changed it's appearance, and I cannot change it back.

Also if you know this, and I'm just curious, usually sometimes when a program is installed, it creates folders in whatever location it wants (places that are IN ADDITION to C:/programs) like my default video folder. I noticed one such program, DivX, made a folder in my videos folder, called DivX, and in THAT folder, made a folder called "Temporary Downloaded Files"

However, this I deleted. The question is, when the time comes that something gets downloaded and is SUPPOSED to go into that folder, and keeping in mind the folder is not there, will this folder automatically be created again so the downloaded file(s) get placed inside it? I noticed some programs like Limewire and Frostwire do this (they have "saved" and "incomplete" as folders, and even if you delete them, and then download files from those programs, they will automatically re-create these folders you deleted).

I'm just wondering if "Temporary Downloaded Files" fits this example. I'm not so sure how to test it though. I'm not sure what I can download from DivX that will go into that folder.

I suppose that you could turn off thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer, then change the icon to be used for the default folder to have them with a specific icon automatically.

This folder by DivX is basically it's working folder for temporary downloads and stuff. Programs like this often place a folder for this in one of your user folders. Often the "Documents" or "Music", or "Pictures" folder. They are placed in the user folder instead of the Program Files folder since these folders are used for the specific user instead of all users on the computer. Often if you delete these folders, the program will automatically recreate only the folder the next time it needs to use it.

Ha thanks man...you're awesome.

Also, I just realized yet ANOTHER thing (dealing with disabling thumbnail previews)! Apparently at least in Vista, Divx will hack the crap out of your Realplayer, because I noticed a lot (but not all) videos will not play in Realplayer and Realplayer will say it shut down due to an error. NOT ONLY THAT, when I click browse on realplayer, and look for a file to open, it shuts down and says "com surrogate stopped working" so there are two annoyances that aren't working. I heard DISABLING THUMBnail preview fixes this and it did for me however, will that mean I can't see thumbnails in folders anymore? I guess it does....whatever...it's not a problem for me but if you know another way around the com surrogate problem besides disabling thumbnail preview that would be great...

That's great news Wandering Flame. I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted. :)
