Vista or software conflict... please help

I have a problem with Vista I would either love some help with or some help with restoring to a previous point.

Somehow, there is a system (presumeably software) conflict of some type that will no longer let several of my software applications (itunes, quickbook, quicken, etc) connect to the internet. Specifically, itunes can connect to the internet, but when I try to connect to the store, I get an error message (-9812). Same with Quicken when we try to connect securely to banks. This is a problem specifically b/c I can no longer sync my iphone.

I have uninstalled my Norton internet security, turned off the firewall, made sure all the software has exceptions w/in the firewall with it on, made sure the date/time clock is correct, changed internet explorer security, disabled as many programs (in attempt to get arround any conflicts) and restarted the computer in safe mode all without success. I also cleared out my host file, but that didn't work either. My older laptop with windows xp and my two iphones are having no such connection issues. So therefor, I'm fairly certain it's a windows or software issue of some type.

I've searched everything, tried as much as I know to do. My next best solution was to maybe do a system restore to a prior timepoint, but using the system restore feature within windows, it only gives me a weeks worth of dates to choose from... I need to go back like 1-2 months now.

Does anyone have a solution or another method to go back in time without completely starting from scratch? (I have a dell that will let me restore back to factory settings).

One other option I considered was upgrading to windows 7 as it might solve my problem and allow me to keep all my settings. Opinions on this option?

Thanks in advance.

System Restore uses space set aside on your disk, so the number of restores that are saved is based on the amount of space reserved. Once that space gets nearly full, the next System Restore will automatically delete the oldest saved one. Once a System Restore is gone, there is no way to go back and resurrect it months down the road.

The basic problem you're encountering is that, in order to restore back to a date, you must have data saved for that date. So, basically, without saved backups, you have nothing to restore FROM. The Dell utility really just wipes the drive (or partition) and reinstalls the PC from the original factory image. So, it's not so much a restore as it is a factory reset. And -- it only works because Dell has saved away the factory image.

Others may express different opinions, but as for me, I wouldn't expect Windows 7 to magically fix anything that is not currently working properly in Vista. Yeah, there is the possibility that you have missing or corrupted system files, and since all the system files will get replaced, that MIGHT fix your problem. But, I wouldn't upgrade to Windows 7 expecting that magically to happen.

Hi put your vista DVD and let it do a windows repair, this will not delete any of the files or program but add what ever is missing.. What software you installed which caused that problem..?
Do you know how to do a windows repair??

Mark,

For the system restore, I have not altered the original settings (which I believe is set up for 300 mb.) I was just unsure how many restore points I could expect for that size of an allocated space.

I had someone else locally mention a different method of restoring prior to booting into windows where a specific date could be entered. I had not heard of an option like this but am thinking it is probably a proprietary option with whichever system my friend had purchased.

Ashvin,

I have not been able to trace my problems back to one particular software or driver installation. I do have the Win Vista install disk and could give that a try.

Another person suggested that the new Netgear wireless N DSL modem/router could have an internal firewall. Again, I think my problem developed well after I had purchased the DSL modem, but hard to tell. Thoughts?

Thanks for the replies.

yes check that thing of internal firewall first.. I will try to look into that in more details and send you the links or procedures..
The problem here don't seems to be with windows, so the restore or repair wouldn't help much.. Its more likely a connection problem, go on your security setting on internet explorer to see the level of security, Add those webpages/ applications not working to the secure site list..

I suppose I should mention that I have a Win XP laptop that is not having any problems performing the same activities. Therefor it can't be the DSL modem/router.

I think that restoring the computer to it's originaly state and slowly adding back software items is probably the only way I can go here. That might just kill me though.

I would love for someone to help figure this out.
