Recently I got a virus that, when in a search engine, would redirect me to different sites rather than the one i clicked on. So I thought that I may have gotten a virus or something. I used a program off the web called "hijackThis" that showed me different registry and file settings that you could stop or start based on what it looked like. I just randomly experimented and ended up screwing everything up worse. So I decided to reinstall the OS.
I reinstalled the OS and everything seemed fine except some of the updates kept failing, like sp2, but they finally all installed. Now I thought i would have a clean OS and everything would run smoothly especially cause i didnt have like 20+ games installed and like 2000+ songs installed. But I was wrong.
Now I experience serious lag times randomly when browsing the internet. I use ie 8. It lags to the point where sometimes it quits running. When this usually happen other programs experience lag as well. Usually , Program is Not Responding appears for like outlook and sometimes my trash can. Sometimes it catches up with itself but other times i have to ctrl atl del and close it that way or restart computer.
I thought that ie was the root of the problems so I looked around on the forum and figured out about the apps and how to turn them off. At first I thought it was working without apps but I was wrong and it messed up again without ever enabling any of the apps. I rebooted the computer after ie froze than my computer couldnt startup properly so it had to start from a restore point.
The only thing i can think of is that when i did the OS reinstall something went wrong. I was thinking that maybe since I only reinstalled the OS and did not reformat the hard drive, that it may have something to do with it because of the virus and messing with registry and file settings previously with "hijackThis".
My OS is vista home premium, I have 2 gb of ram, a 256 video card, 200gb hard drive, Its a HP laptop so I am not sure about the whole formatting hard drive thing. So I think my computer is up to the task of just running ie without crashing and lagging. It used to run fine even with all the games and music. I just cant help to think that the original virus or whatever it was is still messing stuff up somehow since I might of not reformatted my hard drive.
If there is anyhelp available I love ideas otherwise I am just going to have to figure out how to reinstall the OS and how to reformat my HD. If you need anymore information let me know.
