A Acer desktop was dropped of with me with the discription being it wont start up and it beeps:sarc:. After futher investigation: When you power up the system the fans start then stop then start. Then no boot screen or anything just one continuous beep. I was able to get it started up once by clearing the CMOS and reseating the Ram, but that won't work for some reson now. Either it's a virus or the Ram is not sufficant or bad. The system is running Vista 32 bis. with only 1gb of ram which if that was all might work, but they are also running Quickbooks 07 and a few other heafty programs. any sugestions

Hello Ahudek,
Remove all the ram and try one stick at a time, see if that does it.
Also check the connections to the graphics card/cards.
It does sound like a memory problem, but i got this when a power lead to a graphics card went bad.

Depending on the BIOS (each has it's own warning beep codes) I'd also lean towards faulty RAM or failing / fault with the the video card.

That continuous beep is definitely indicative of a hardware fault, rather than a software one, so give Stoneys suggestions a try.

That was how i got it to boot the first time, but it only worked long enough to log in and back up a few files, then it shut down and is back to it's old tricks. I am going to try two 1gb sticks instead of two 512mb sticks and see if that works. I do remember somthing about a virus that has the same MO, but cant remember what it was. the are avid facebook ohh it's free downloaders so the virus is a possibility.
