Hello,

Lately my system has been suffering from random blue screens with "driver_power_state_failure" in them. Sometimes during an online game, sometimes during work (photoshop), or just surfing the internet (firefox).
I'm using Vista Home Premium 64bit sp2, but have pretty limited hardware experience.
A large (500gb) external drive is plugged in all the time through a firewire port. My system has remained unchanged for the last two years, and the crashes started happening a couple of months ago, but only once every couple of weeks, now I experience them about once a day, and just had my second one this afternoon.

I've read through the FAQ's for the forums, hopefully someone can help me out. Is there more specific information I should include about my machine?

thanks in advance

Hi WW

Not random at all. You have a firewire device correct?

Ok you have at least two problems. first the obvious priamry cause. the firewire driver (or device) is taking way too long to respond. could be old driver, bad cable anything.

Second you have SP2 yet more than half of the drivers are from before march 2008???

these are just the oldest ones

I would upgrade the firewire driver.

update all the critical drivers, like BIOS, video, USB, etc.

then if you are overclocking stop

you can also run a system file check to verify and repair your system files

You do that by typing cmd in search>right click and run as admin>
Type SFC /SCANNOW

and let us know the results

If you have any other BSOD upload them so we can narrow our focus

Hope this helps

Hi Ken,
thanks for the reply, I ran the scannow command and it didn't find any errors.
can't find any updates for the firewire drivers for my external disk or bios. I switched the disk to a USB port and haven't experienced any problems in a day and a half of steady use. So I think that must have been the issue.

thanks again for your help
