So I always keep all of my pictures and documents in the My Pictures and My Documents folder, until I got a random update through Microsoft for Vista, then when the update finished I got a cool new GUI with different icons and a different wallpaper.

I check my documents and pictures and they're gone, to which I then did a start search, I found all of my data and then cut-pasta'D it into the new and empty My Documents and My Pictures folders.

Everything was good, then I shut down my computer. When I got back on my computer the interface before the update came back on and my pictures/documents weren't in the old My Documents and My Pictures folders anymore, I moved them when the interface was new, now I cannot find them even with a start search but it only leads to the location they once were w/o bringing them, back.

My one and only account is administrator, so that can't be it, and I disabled Norton and did system restore but that didn't bring my files back, I used Recuva but none of my pictures/documents were in there.

What I am thinking is before the update my files were in location A, then after the update they were still in A and then I moved them to location B in the new GUI, after I shut down the whole windows interface reverted back to the old one with all of my data still in location B, but now using start search just tells me that my files are still in location A even though they are not, so my data's still on the hard drive somewhere.

I have a C drive and a D partition HP Recovery drive and the amount of drive space hasn't changed on either after the upgrade (then downgrade). Also it says 11 gigs of the HP Recovery drive are taken even though it's empty when I click on it.

I really want to get my vacation pictures and homework back, so if you took the time to read this, thank you.

This is exactly the same thing that has just happened to me.

Have not been able to find a solution to it.

I can say with certainty that I will never be using a Microsoft product ever again.

Download and find it with Shadow Explorer. If they are there you can find them.

If that does not work, if you can, an system restore from before the problem may do the trick

I did a system restore prior to the installation of the update, for some
reason, the Music folder was recovered, but all the other folders (Documents, Pictures, Favourites etc.) were not.

It is not a huge issue. I did of course have back ups of most of the important files that I had stored their, it is just terribly annoying losing many of the other things and not knowing why it occurred.

Thank you for your response.
