How to Disable "Read Only" when saving????

One Trick Pony

I have just purchased a new hard drive with Vista / Windows 7.

I am a full time journalist and becasue I am so familiar with MS Office Word 2003 I had it loaded on my new drive.

My trouble is after I save a Word file I alaways back it up on my external hard drive for saftey sake.

Whenever I attempt to do this now, however, I always get the dialogue box "This is a read only file".

How do I get rid of this annoying, frustrating problem.

I simply want to back up a word document on an external drive ... so why won't it let me do it. And why does it stipulate that it is a "Read only file" when I never saved it originally as such???????????????????

Thank you so much.

Hi One Trick Pony, If you right click on your file and select Properties then uncheck Read only and select apply then ok

Mitchell - I did precisely what you advised. I used Windows Explorer and went into the Properties of both the folder and the files on my external hard drive and I unclicked "read only".

Then I opened the file from my C:drive and tried to save it on the external hard drive and it again gave me the dialogue box that it is a "read Only file" and the only way I can save it is to change the file name.

This is absurb, frustrating and annoyaing. Geeze I am quickly learning to hate VISTA!

Appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Thank you

Just did it again. Went into the Folder properties and uncheck "read only". Did the same thing with all the files in the folder.

Then went back and checked and all the boxes were rechecked as "read only".

Even though I applied the changes they didn't stick!
