I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on several machines without incident. Yesterday I installed it onto my desktop. A Gateway that was previously running Win XP I had backed up my hard drive to an external becuase I wanted to do a clean setup. I chose those uptions as they appeared in the setup screen. The os set up fine. I then ran Windows Update. AFter everything downloaded I let the system install the 87 updates. The computer shyt down. I restaeted it and re-ran updates again. After downloading it installed about 7 more updates and shut down. Now when I turn on the machine. I get the "Splash Screen" tehn a black screen and in the top left corner it says:
Booting "Windows Vista"
ACPI
Vista Loader 2.1.2
Done!
Fallback 1
find --set-root /bootmgr

That hangs for about two minutes then I get a screen that says Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration.

Then a screen that says: The file ARFSPK0N could not be found Press any key to continue. I press a key and I get a Setup Failed and it just basically goes back to the beginning.

I have tried installing the Original XP setup disc that came with my computer however it reads it then I get a message saying that Drive "R" could not be read and then my CD drive door opens. There is no disc in that drive as the setup disk is a DVD so it is in the DVD drive.

I went into the whole setup screen and chnaged the boot order but nothing seems to work.

I need HELP!!!

Thank you very much.

Markyajv,
Welcome to Vista Forums!

Was your gateway having any other issues before you updated it? Virus, infection of any type? Or was it just time to upgrade?

The reason that you might be getting that disc error is because that might be a recovery disc, not an installation disc.

Try inserting you vista install disc, make sure that you are booting from the DVD drive before the harddrive. Then, when you go to install, when you are looking to see what partion to install on, make sure that you erase, not format, erase the partion. This usually helps with installation errors.

Ben

No I was having no issues. Everything was working fine until after Windows installed those last 7 updates and shut down. (The funny think was when I installed the OS I chose the options to do a complete clean install but all my files were juts moved to a (Windows.Old) file.

I am going to attempt what you suggested. The "Original" Win XP disc that came with the computer is a DVD to reformat and reinstall the computer back to it's original condition. And that will not even boot up.

I thought I was pretty comp savvy. I think something happened along the way.....

OK I changed the settings in the boot menu to boot from the DVD drive. I put the "Origina " Restore disk in the drive. The drive blinks. I get message asking me choose 1) Restore Windows 2) Open a command Prompt. I choose 1 I then get asked "Are you sure" I say Yes. I then get an error saying that drive "R" cannot be read Abort/Retry/Fail. I retried and same thing happened. I Fail and the "CD" drive opens and it says to remove the disc and reboot the computer. (There is no disc in the CD drive because the restaore is a DVD. When I pushed f8 to get into the "Safe Mode" options. I chose "start windows at last known good configuration" When I do that the only thing I have to choose from is "Windows XP Professional" Which I NEVER had on my computer. This is also where I get the "The File ARFSPKR0N could not be found."
I am very confused!

Ok,
I think you need to look through this tutorial and make a bootable USB installation key. Do you have a second computer to work off of?
If so then i would redownload the install files. Then follow the tutorial and then try to install vista from there. I will look up some more info online in the mean time.

Markyajv,

1. Insert the DVD (also called the CD by the computer, they are the same thing)
2. When you get the options to restore windows or open a command prompt, open the command prompt.
3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

This should help us with the errors, and it might fix them...

Any luck Markyajv?
I was looking for quite a while last night on many different sites and also quite a few google and bing searches for the file that could not be found. There was nothing on it. I was really shocked.

Ben,

Ok after trying almost everything and about to give up and take my desktop to the local computer store I thought "I wonder what would happen if I put my old Dell laptop reinstall disk in and try." ..well guess what? It worked! It formatted my HD and installed Win xp Pro and then I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate - Ran the windows update (Man there are a lot of them for vista!) But so far so good. Fingers crossed!
