Solved I can't boot Vista and I want to backup via C:/ if possible!

Advice Pro

Normal & 'Safe mode' won't work for me, 'Repair...' either, so before I restore, I'd like to backup via C:/. Commands such as 'copy' & 'xcopy' copy files & folders to another location. I have an 8GB SD, but I don't know what drive is the reader.

I've tried to access Vista by typing 'Windows' @ the C:/, but this messags returns:

'WINDOWS' is not recognized as an internal or external command'

Windows is listed @ the 'Dir' command!

What are the advantages of the C:/ anyway? Is C:/ the same as DOS?

its a bit hard if you dont know how to use the command prompt. So reinstall over the other installation. (but dont format the hard drive) this will keep all your folders intact (when you go to the C:\ drive after reinstalling there will be a windows.old or something like that. in there get which files you want to backup and delete the windows.old - problem solved

d3aths3rver, is it guarenteed that there'll be a file similar to or exactly 'windows.old' or is like restoring w/o completly wiping the HDD which doesn't guarentee that personal data won't be lost?

I'd still rather try to backup my files via the cmd. prompt! I did access Windows from there, with the installation disc, but I don't know how to get to the 'Documents' & 'Downloads' folders. What is the C: path to each? I guess the path would follow 'C:/Windows' with 'System32'.

Reinstalling over the old OS will have this file guaranteed. (as long as you DO NOT format the hard drive when reinstalling)
Alternatively you can partition the hard drive Install vista again on that partition and access the files from the other partition when you login for the first time - this is if you do not believe me
