cant find saved file!?

hey guys, im new here (my 1st post) i have looked everywhere and used this site as my last option! basically i was on a divx streaming site, watching a video and as the video finishes buffering i right click and go to "save video as" i then save the file (to my desktop, not a hidden folder or a protected operating folder) the file saves ok and the size of my c:/ drive goes down, so i know its on my laptop but when i close everything and go to desktop the file is not there!

i've searched for it on my drive but the search doesnt find the file!

i've tried saving the file to other folders (my documents, downloads etc)

i go back to the site and buffer the video again and right click, "save video as" again and in the browse window I SEE THE FILE!! (it also asks if i want to overwrite/replace the file) but still i dont see the file on my actual desktop or folder i saved it to!

it isnt another users desktop its been saved to or some hidden folder, its my main desktop i am the only user on this laptop i've searched for viruses and such and tried alot of option changes but still dont find the file!!

i try to copy the file from the "save as" box but it says it cant or cant find the file (it is there because the size of my drive goes down and the file is visible in "save as" box) i've also tried to play the said divx file from the "save as" box but it still says it cant find the file!

im totally baffled by this! please, any help is greatly appreciated!

thank you

Can you post the link from where you are watching the file and are trying to save it from. Maybe we can figure it out.

this might seem silly but you didnt mention weather or not you have rebooted ever since - i wanted to ask if you have tried right clicking on the desktop and selecting refresh.....
its happened to me a couple times that something wont show up on my desktop right away but if i hit refresh - it pops up.
i only mentioned rebooting cause if you have rebooted then it would have popped up by now.

just a thoufght....
when you try to save as again .....
in the browse window - you said you see the file .....
try to select it and choose Copy.
Then Paste it to somewhere else.
just a thought - it is pretty boggling though, after all that youve tried..

Hi There,

I have exactly the same problem as tadden, and running a similar os (Win 7 64bit).

As i experience it, i watch a streaming file, then use the save file as function in the (divx web player) the file saves successfully however is invisible and does not consume memory within the folder saved.

It is worth noting the files are visible (as tadden said) with the save as box when you attempt to re-save the file and you can in fact right click open the file and still watch it!

I am completely confused by this, the file is invisible and doesnt take any hard disk space but is still a file that you can watch when opened through the save as box when saving another streamed divx.

Its also worth noting this started some month after installing the divx player, i can only assume a windows update or something has done it. I suppose my post only extends taddens by stating the files are still openable (which i feel is part of the mystery).

If i attempt to copy and paste the file using the save as window, a warning bx appears stating file cannot be found and to verify its location. i suppose the file must exist somewhere

When I save or download streaming videos they go to one of a number of folders: Videos, Public Videos, Downloads, and/or RealPlayer Downloads. Have you tried looking in all of those folders?

Also, the videos don't usually download by the name you give them, they usually download using the name of the app that is downloading them. So open any files that look like they could possibly be the video you're looking for. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the reply Imperfect1.

Yeah i know what your talking about (Re: saves to dedicated video folders, or the programs own dedicated video folder, also the program naming rather than user naming).

Its simply not showing up whatsoever. I have done somemore testing and it seems this problem only exists if you stream the file first, if you do a straight right click download/save, it saves and displays the icon fine (and the file works of course!)

My solution (not really a solution!) is to simply nolonger stream, just right click download, but its not as convenient, Damn my childish i want it now attitude!

Just to note i have updated the DIVX player so will try a stream save later and post my results for anyone who is interested. once again thanks for the reply Imperfect1

I don't know if this will help, but I found this on the web and it may explain where your files are going and also how to save the streaming versions and move them to wherever you want to permanently save them (it may be a bit different than how you're currently doing it). I don't know if this applies to all divx videos or only certain players or programs or sites, but it seems like it's worth a shot (it isn't that hard to check - if it works, great - if not, it isn't much time wasted):

If you have watched a DivX movie on the web player then Right click the player -> select "Preferences" and Cache then "Open Cache" folder (or go to it as listed below or it may be in some other location but most likely similarly named so a complete advanced search may find it). To search the entire C: drive in Vista go to Start / Search Box and type in EXT:AVI. As you're typing you'll see two hyperlinks appear just above where you're typing and one will say Search Everywhere. Click on that. That will do a quick indexed search and bring up a dialog box. Click on Advanced Search. Click on the location drop down menu and find Drive C: and click on it. Check the box "include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (may be slow)." Then click on Search. You will now be searching your entire hard drive for the specified filetype. Hopefully, one of the locations will be the cache file. And yes, it's not a very efficient way of searching the entire drive for a file but that's how it's done in Vista.

Your cached movies are in there (in theory). Copy them to another location (as cleaning up temporary files will delete them perhaps before you have a chance to save them) and if necessary rename from *.part to *.avi. It's a *.part until the download's completed (again, this may not apply in all cases - maybe only for that particular program - but you probably wouldn't want to copy it before it was complete anyway). If you know for sure they are saved as a different filetype, then search above for that filetype instead of .avi (and seach the cache for that other filetype as well).

Now you've got the movie and it's saved wherever you chose. Play it in DivX player whenever you choose.

The Cache folder (as far as I know - I have never watched a divx video myself to my knowledge so I have no cached videos to verify this) on Vista is: C:\Users\<Username>\Videos\DivX Movies\Temporary Downloaded Files.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hmmmm, okay Jimmy, here's a thought. . . not a solution, but a work-around. I frequent a site called MovieForumz that is fabulous! Among other things, it offers movies and videos through many different sources, some of which utilize divx. Frequently there are more than one movie at a time that I want to download and you can do that --- download multiple films simultaneously. So that gives me an idea regarding your situation. Have you tried starting out by doing a direct download of the film/video and then while its downloading, go back into the site (as if you're opening it for the first time --- not with a 'back-arrow') and stream the film/video? That way, you should be able to have your cake and eat it too. . .
