Vista x64 business random computer freeze up issue finally solved:

New video driver installed, end of november,
new Vista updates in December,
New Avast software installed December
machine still freezes ONLY when connected to the internet with the Linksys wireless card

so the answer is what is the difference between normal bootup and safe mode boot up? and the answer is services. There is a services conflict when the wireless network is activated

If you have this problem, here is how I solved it, your mileage may vary!

Disable the following services:

Internet Connection Sharing
Multimedia Class Scheduler (Manual)
Network Connections
Offline Files
Portable Device Enumerator (Manual)
Server (Manual)

I also disabled almost all Vista tasks in the Task Scheduler, as I am not sure if a Task was interfering with the internet connection, though I doubt it. . .

Now, when I boot up normally, the mainframe stays booted!

must have taken about 12-15 hours of sporadic weekend hours to get it narrowed down. . .
