Installers for Vista

My MS installer is totally defunct and I have tried all the repairs recommended without success.

My question is does anyone know of a down loadable installer that will perform the same function as the one bundled with Vista? There are certain programs that only install using the bundled installer which has passed away. This is limiting my ability to install several devices I need. Any help appreciated.

Yes,
I tried all of the mentioned fixes/repairs. It seems the installer will not uninstall nor will a new one install. MS suggests reformatting and reinstalling Vista. That is not an option for me at the moment. Too much data to transfer even though most is backed up. I would have to reinstall a lot of software to set the new registry. A do not have a copy of the registry before this started and anyway I have been told reinstalling an old registry over a new install simply does not work. Just have to live with it I guess.

You are right about MS junk. I think this whole Vista crap was setup to generate some $. Why else do the come out with W7 so soon. What burns me is my whole system was working fine untill MS uploaded a bunch of "updates" to me. That wiped out IE 8 so bad that even MS techs could not figure it out except to reformat. It is so messed up that the installer was also wiped and nothing will uninstall so I can reinstall. MS says that is because the files are corrupted to the point they can not find themselves to uninstal themselves. What a crock! Of course MS troubleshoots from India or somewhere and the English leaves a lot to be desired which leaves me asking if they even know what they are talking about.

Hi Ronda,

Step 1: Manually replace the corrupt Windows Modules Installer
==================================

1. Click "Start". In the search bar, type in "%windir%" (without the
quotation marks) and press Enter.

2. Right click Servicing folder and click "Properties".

3. Click the "Security" tab.

4. Click "Advanced".

5. Click the "Owner" tab.

6. Click Edit.

7. Under "Change owner to", highlight the Administrator account. Click
on "Replace Owner on Subcontainers and objects". Click "OK".

8. Click "OK". You might receive an "Access Denied" error. Just go
ahead.

9. In the Security tab of Servicing folder properties, click "Edit".

10. Highlight Administrators and grant "Full Control".

11. Click "OK".

Step 2: Manually restore missing file
============================

1. Save the fix.zip file attached, to the Desktop.

2. Extract the two files. TrustedInstaller.exe and
TrustedInstaller.reg.

3. Copy the TrustedInstaller.exe file into C:\Windows\servicing
folder.

Step 3: Backup Registry
===================

1. Click "Start". Type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter.

2. Select Computer (the root node) in the left pane, click Export under
the File menu, choose All under Export range, select Desktop in the Save
in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save.

Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We
can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file.

Step 4: Import TrustedInstaller.reg
===========================

1. Double click the TrustedInstaller.reg file

2. OK the warning.

Restart the computer and check if Windows Update works.

ImportTrustedInstaller_regfile_plusx64installer

TrustedInstaller_x86.zip

I tried the manual replacement for the installer. Everything went fine until you said to go to the fix.zip file on the desktop. Where do I find the fix.zip file? It does not appear on my desktop.

Okay, SIW2, I did all the steps; however at step 4, Import TrustedInstaller. reg -- I get the message: 'Cannot import . . . . .. Some keys are open by the system or other processes'.

I have closed everything that was running, including the firewall and anti-virus. Of course tons of services and processes show running in Task Manager. Don't know what to do now.

The reason I am going through this is that I am trying to install TurboTax 2009 Deluxe and continue to get the 'Windows Installer Service could not be accessed ...' Spent 2 hours on the phone with TurboTax Support and they gave up and said it's a Microsoft issue. This is the only program I've ever had this problem with.
Thanks for listening and thanks for your help!

SIW2 I followed everything you recommended and it all went perfectly. Unfortunately it did not work to give me back the MS installer.

I was told by MS (from India) that apparently the program is so messed up it will not uninstall or reinstall. Ditto my IE. They want me to format and reinstall Vista which I am not going to do. Just too much on the HD to be worth transferring it all simply for those two items. They were ruined in the first place by MS updates!!

Has anyone found a solution for this?.I've spent hours on it and am using Vista Home Premium. (32 bit)

When I attempted to download and install the Installer that another site advised I then received an error message that it was not compatible with my system.

I even followed another suggestion about accessing Services and manually restarting MSI. That didn't work either. Message said Windows could not start the Windows Installer on Local Computer. Something about the path being wrong.

Please give me some guidance on this.

I am sorry to hear it didn't have the desired result for you.

Have you tried a Repair install ?

That is doing an "in-place upgrade " installation with the Vista dvd. If you have a more recent copy of the dvd , including Service packs - even better.

The idea is , it replaces all the Vista o/s files - leaving your data intact.

You do need to enter your product key during, or after, the Repair install.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Make a backup image of your drive first , as always.

It is a great idea to make regular backup images of your Vista partition regularly on an external drive. Any serious trouble - just restore the image. With any image app. it is safest to run off it's boot cd first - boot it up and make sure it works on your machine ( it almost certainly will - better to check).

Here are some great free ones.

Only available free till Tuesday 19th Jan 2010 :

Paragon Backup & Recovery Compact Free registration
Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Compact [32-bit]
Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Compact [64-bit]
Backup and Recovery 10 Compact Details

If you miss that , this is always available free:

Backup & Recovery 10 Free

B&R10 Free Registration

Another good one - not as many features as the Paragon apps. - but can go very fast ( might be the one to use if you have a large amount to back up , and you want it done quickly)
Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Hope it helps

This has turned into another issue.

I don't have the original OS disc. These tightwad companies just don't do things like they used to.

The day I bought and brought this Lenovo home, I created 9 (nine) Recovery discs. Two are called Recovery discs and the other 7 are called programs discs.

Attempted to utilize them last night and they did not function.Kept saying I had the wrong disc. I was extremely careful in creating them and marking them. Called Lenovo and since the PC is out of warranty I would have to cough up $100 to $575 for tech support. So forget that.

Now here is the real crux of this mess.

I spent hours on the Internet searching for these answers.

If I have a corrupt Windows Installer file WHERE do I go to get a good file to download for Vista SP2,32 bit?

I understand that Windows Installer 4.5 came with the SP2 update. Can I Uninstall SP2 and then reinstall and have a good copy of the blessed installer?

If I have 32 bit, what is the difference between that and 64bit or 86 bit? I'm so confused.

I just wish someone would be kind enough to give me some simple instructions to get the Windows Installer Service up and running.

I've been given so many contradictory instructions it' s beginning to get scary.

Thanks.

SIW2,
So far the backup programs you listed for us use the Microsoft installer. Thus, no banana. There is one I have not tried yet but Paragon uses the MS installer.

Vegaspat,
I feel your pain!! In addition to my installer bad the MS updates took out my Internet explorer and nothing I or MS can do, it seems, the only answer is to format the whole drive and reinstall the system. I have 650 gigs on this hard drive and really don't want to format it and start over. I can get around the IE by using Firefox but still no installer!! Dell did provide the system disk but the "repair system" ends by telling me to reformat... I do have everything critical backed up to an exterbal drive but would have to reinstall all the programs in order to set the registry...No Thanks!! If I knew how and if it is possible I would put in a new hard drive, put the system on it and use the present one as a slave. Not certain how that would effect the computer with two system drives on it. Besides a lot of programs default to drive C.
