Folder icons constantly changing

Vista newb here, soon to be a 7 newb - hope this issue doesnt transfer.


I have a folder for all of my music and then subfolders for each type (country, random, etc).

When I go into one of the subfolders, my music is always listed in details.

I dont want it to, so I change it to view small icons.


If I then close the folder for several hours or even shut down/reboot, it goes back to the details.


I have since figured out how to change this by customizing the main folder, but it is now showing them in LARGE icons, which is just as annoying and keeps changing them back to large ones even after I switch it to small ones.


Can some one please tell me how to change this and make it STAY that way??

You might see if resetting all folder view settings may allow the changes you make to be remembered afterwards.

The thing of it is... my computer is brand new (its only a month old) and I dont know enough about Vista to have changed anything besides what I mentioned in my original post.

Would resetting the view settings really help?

Vista is bad about all of a sudden not remembering your folder view settings for whatever reason. Using the download in METHOD TWO of that tutorial below will reset the folder view settings, and should allow Vista to start remembering your folder view settings again. It will not hurt anything.

Okay, so I gave it a try. I'm not really sure if its going to help - I had checked the folder options prior to doing Method Two, and they looked exactly the same before and after.

If this doesnt fix the problem, then what do I do?

After doing it, you will need to set the folder view to what you would like it to be for that particular folder, then close the window. It should open that folder from that same location with the same folder view that it when it was last closed.

If this folder is on a removable drive (ex: USB flash drive) or other removable media (ex: DVD), then Vista will not remember the folder view settings for it since it is removable.

Well, it fixed the issue of changing the folder icons, only now its making my desktop icons randomly shrink down to tiny views (even though I have it set on Classic Icons and it STAYS on Classic)... its also making my IE icon in my quick launch bar become a white page with little shapes in the center - y'know, that icon Windows uses when it doesnt recognize a file type?

Yeah, that one.


So.... now what?

This would be a separate issue since the folder view settings does not affect the icon itself. You might see if rebuilding the icon cache can help with this though.

Still not resolved. Solution given worked for a couple of days - Vista is now once again forgetting my folder settings.

Vista has been buggy when it comes to folder views. It's best to not change to many of them to help avoid it not remembering again. About all you can do is reapply the download to reset the folder view again.
