Old canon camera and vista 64

Ok just before I start I am a technically challenged housewife who will be referring all techy advise on to my husband to translate. I am writing this as I will be waiting until my children are grown before he gets round to it so here we go....

Recently bought two new laptops with vista (previous laptop was xp) upgraded one to windows 7 but no change in problem on that one. Transferred all our photos over and only our photos from our new canon camera (powershot 850) can be opened. All our old photos from our canon isus v2 (I think) can not be opened. Normally I wouldn't be concerned but since they are the first 7-8 years of our childrens lives it sort of bugs me. We still have them on the old xp computer and on disks but would like to have them all on one computer and not have to collect computers every 5 years when microsoft decides to change their systems just to view them. We just get the icon of the picture viewers whether it be pic manager or photo gallery. The permissions are all the same but when you go into pic properties and then details there is no reference to our old camera with date taken etc but on our new camera pics that we can open there is all the details (ie name of cam, date taken, pix etc.) Haven't tried plugging the old camera in to see if it can even connect as we are moving countries at the moment and it is on the slow boat coming out. We bought the camera somewhere around 2002-2003 so it is not ancient as such but old definately by techy standards.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated as canon is completely stumped by this. Spent a few hours clicking on tabs etc whilst on the phone.

So your pictures taken on the Canon isus cannot be opened on one of the new laptops, the one with vista right? But they can be opened on the laptop with windows 7?
Just to clarify

Its getting old, been upgrading it over the past few years, mainly the ram and the gpu's. Will hold out till some next year before I build another one.
So you created and saved them on windows XP. What file type did you saved them as? Have a look on your windows XP pc.

Sounds like theres a problem with the file type, format or some form of encrption for it not to be working on both new laptops with different operating systems on them.

Could have been created before xp even. We have transferred them before and transferred them the same as the other photos from our newer camera. Husband plugged a cord from one computer to the other hit a button and all the transferring happened. Everything else is fine including photos from our newer camera in the same folders as the older camera photos.

File type is Jpeg on new computer. (is that what you meant as type as my techy speak is not so good)

Old computer is on the boat with the old camera so not sure how we did it at first. I am assuming they were jpeg then too.

Will get husband onto the link you provided. I am too scared to do anything in the way of programs incase I crash the thing.

Thanks

The filetype is correct. .jpeg is a standard filetype for pictures. It should open. Have your husband try the above program. This is quite mysterious.

just tried the program, but to no avail. it doesn't recognize the file format even though it's jpg. they're not jpeg, but jpg. does that matter?

My Computer

.jpg is OK too. Have a look in Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations which program is set as default for .jpg.
