Solved Desktop and thumbnails view error

Hi...
I seem to be having a problem with my desktop and thumbnails preview. My computer was infected with some malware and a virus, which just got cleaned by some anti-spyware softwares. Since that operation, I can no longer see any thumbnails. All I see is blank squares. I cannot see their preview in the preview pane, but I can view them once I open them.
Also, since this started happening, I cannot view my desktop wallpaper as well. All I see is a black screen. All icons on the desktop are fine. I am unable to choose a new desktop as well. Please help if this issue is fixable. Thnaks.

Hopefully, you may just have to re-set your thumbnails and wallpaper options, and try re-booting afterwards. That may solve the problem. Try it, and let us know.

Are these folder shortcuts?

You might see if rebuilding the icon cache may be able to help.

Thanks a lot for offering the help. But I tried both the options and none worked. I reset the icon cache, but my desktop wallpaper is still a blask screen. I can view the icons clearly, but the thumbnails of pictures are invisible. Also, if I want to change my desktop background, and I open a folder with pictures in the "Choose background" section, all I see is black white screen, but I can see squares being selected with their names, but no pictures!

Can someone look into this problem?

I have attached 3 jpeg files. The first is a screenshot of my desktop. Note that all the icons are fine, just that the desktop is a black screen.
The second is a view of "My Pictures" folder. Note that I cannot view the thumbnails, nor their preview in the rpeview pane, but they all are there with their actual details and sizes.
The third is a screenshot of the screen where I go to change my wallpaper. Note that all pictures are there, but I cannot see anything, except blank swuares.

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Harkeerat,

I must admit that it does not look good, but you might see if running a sfc /scannow command may be able fix any bad system files that may be responsible for this. If not, then you may need to backup anything that you do not want to lose and reinstall Vista.

I will start the sfc scan. Hopefully this might help. I remember that when I was trying to get rid of the virus and malware that my PC had been infected from, it was recommended to me by the anti-malware software to disable a few things, including a few drivers. I may have disabled the view of thumbnails in the process too. Is't there any setting in System Configuration , Control Panel or System Dispay Settings that can disable the view of thumbnails?

Hi
I did the sfc scan. It gave me the result that there is nothing wrong with the integrity of the system files. Can I change any option to re-enable thumbnails?

P.S. I can view all the pictures in all the folders if the size is reduced. They all are invisible only if I open a folder in the thumbnails view. If I reduce the size of the pictures and then increase the size, all the pictures become visible!

Umm, this is a stubborn one.

Check to make sure that you have thumbnails turned on, and that in Default Programs, make sure that Windows Photo Gallery is set as the default program with all of it's association set to it as well.

Hi...well....I contacted a friend of mine who is a former employee in Microsoft Canada. He told me to do a system restore on anything 5 days or older. I did that and everything is fine now. I did check my settings for visual performance, and they are fine. I am not too sure what had happened, but I found this forum very very helpful, and you as very very learned and helpful.
