New to Forum...Problem with Recovery D, lag...

Hi to everyone here. I'm new to the Forum, and I am technologically challenged, so please be patient with me....

Background: After my Dell laptop stopped working last year, Dell finally (it took 3 months and numerous phone calls and visits from a tech) replaced my computer with an Inspiron 1520.

Problem: Ever since I received my new (refurbished) laptop, I have had the message of "insufficient storage available. cannot backup files."
Further, my computer has always run slower than any other computer I have used. I get the message "low disc space..running out of disc space" often. (Dell has been no help whatsoever, and at this point, I am out of warranty.)

To try to resolve my problem I have compressed the drive 'to save space' which gave me 231 mb of space. Certainly not enough to run any backups.

I have defragmented and get the message that it does not have to be defragmented at this time.

My computer takes quite a log time to get going (probably an unrelated issue, but certainly a problem), so I have visited the install/uninstall section and have uninstalled those few things that I feel are safe to uninstall, but that doesn't help.

I've tried to back up onto discs, but it doesn't allow me to do so.

I called Tiger Direct and they sold me more memory. I installed it, but have found that I have (and had) plenty of room in Drive C. Thanks Tiger Direct!

A friend of mine suggested I buy an external hard drive and just disable the message I get. A good suggestion, I believe.

That of course will not resolve my problem with the speed of my computer. I regularly clear my temporary files and the only thing that comes up when I try to speed up the computer is to empty my recycle bin, which is empty and clear.

So I have a two fold problem....Recovery Drive D and the speed of the computer.

Any suggestions of what else I can possibly try?

Oh, and get this...the refurb laptop from Dell had files from the previous owner on it including favorites and iTunes, and who knows what else. I believe I have eliminated all that information.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice.

Personally i would do a wipe and a clean install...
If you bug Dell they will send you the OS CD for a small shipping fee...

I do this with any used/refurbished PC's i work on and highly recommend it.

How big is the hard drive?

Also if you want to remove the recovery D:
1. Go to control panel
2. Administrative Tools
3. Computer Management
4. Storage(wait to load)
5. Select the D partition and press delete(will delete all data on partition)
6. Right click on C and choose expand drive.
7. expand it all the way.
8. You should be good there

Only do that is you wish to delete partition.

Regarding disc space, have you tried removing system restore points?

Go into Disc Cleanup and choose other Options tab. Click on Clean up restore points, it will leave the most recent available, may take some time to remove all.

Try and not compress your drive, it will make the pc run slower because it has to decompress it to find the files(not recommended).

I hope this helps.
