I am trying to upgrade to Windows 7, but am having problems with uninstalling things that need to be. The installer/uninstaller fails either when it tries to open the wizard or just after the wizard opens. I trying to install the windows installer cleanup, but that wouldn't install either. I have tried FRevo Uninstaller and CCcleaner, but they can't get it down either.

Because doing that means hours and hours of problematic reinstalls of programs, etc. There must be a reason that a simple, but needed program fail. I want to know the reason and the fix.
And is there a guarantee that the same problem won't carry over to Win7? This problem was probably caused by an upgrade from XP to Vista and the dreaded x86.

It up to you, but I would stongly recommend doing a clean install to Windows 7 as well. Expecially since you upgrade from XP to Vista previously. It may take longer to do, but you would be happier in the end without all of those most likely upgrade issues from remnants of the previous operating systems.

I second that. You will be better of doing a clean install as your applications (except those which are self-contained) will need reinstalling anyway to ensure that the correct data is written to the correct locations and to the registry. Sure, you can upgrade instead of clean install, but I wouldn't recommend it. Each time you upgrade from an OS to a newer OS, you run the risk of any problems that you had in the original OS manifesting themselves in the newer one.

A custom install would be fine to, since it's the same as doing a clean install except that it adds a C:\Windows.old folder that contains a copy of all the files from the previous installation.
