Error 0x80070052 Directory or File cannot be created

I am copying (drop & drag) a large number of .mp3 files (650gb) from a laptop to a "new" 2tb external hdd. After a certain point (varies), I start receiving the error code "0x80070052 Directory of File cannot be created" and it will not allow me to copy that file to the hdd into that particular folder. From what I've read, this issue is typically related to the HDD format, but this one is a Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 and is formatted FAT32. I've been able to finish copying the files over to the HDD, but it required me to create a several new folders.... it will copy some more files, but after a period of time will interrupt the process again with the same error message. I am now trying to consolidate the .mp3 files that exist on the 2tb HDD into a single folder, but the error code continues to keep me from finishing. I ran a registry cleaner and completed the disk error utility located under properties/tools, but no issues were found.
PC = HP HDX18 Laptop, 4gb ram, 1TB hdd, Vista Home Prem 64x
HDD = Fantom 2tb eSATA/USB external HDD with Hitachi drive (FAT32)

Any suggestions or assistance????

I have the exact same error happening. Two Samsung Story 1.5TB drives. The first is my primary music drive where everything is sorted in aphabetical named folders. The second drive was purchased to act as the backup drive but when copying between the two up pops this error. Really strange.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the welcome and suggestion.

I merged both registry entries but it made no difference. My drop down menu options do not include the additions.

I am using Vista 32 bit not that that should make a difference and have also tried it on an XP laptop with no avail.

That's odd, did you re-start the PC though I don't think that's required; when you right click something you want to move you don't get these entries in the context menu?

I did close restart after the merge.

The menu I get up is nothing like yours. I was going to post an image as you have done but don't know how to capture the image with the menu visible.

That doesn't make sense as I've added that to Vista more times than I could count and have never had an issue with it; try the 'add' again and see if sorts it.

Okay, i've just returned and tried again. After restarting the PC the option is now there [which is good] ...... regrettably, it didn't work and the error message remains.

The original internet searches on this problem indicated that this was a formatting issue attributed to NTFS formatted drives. Consequently I reformatted the drive [as a quick format] as FAT32. I was considering reformatting the drive using the slow format but since starting the Format Partition Wizard I have discovered that the original drive is NTFS - so the initial advice I'd collected appears to be incorrect in this matter.

Ho hum, this is very frustrating.

Well, a result ... sort of!

I considered how the original Folder was created and remembered that it grew to its current size in a piece meal fashion. eg. as CD's from my collection were ripped to mp3 they were added to the folder.

So, instead of trying to copy the entire folder in one copy action, I broke it down into mini-size bites of circa 5-10GB. It takes longer and you have to hang around the PC but it worked. Just have all the other folders to do now!

Perhaps there is a limit on the amount of data that can be copied in one go? The strange thing about this error though, is that it remembers it errored and afterwards will not allow piecemeal additions to the folder in question. Strange but true.

Oh, and by the way, the Copy to Folder action is a real good addition. So many thanks from across the pond my friend. :D

Yeah, it looks exactly like the cure, for the symptoms experienced also by Rock Chalk Red who started this thread. I wonder if he ever got it sorted - and if so why didn't he post back.

Oh well cheers.

Hi folks. I had the same error when trying to drag and drop pictures to a 1GB usb thumb drive. It would only let me drop 170 out of 363 of them. I tried this several times and different ways with the same result. There was nothing else on the drive (not new, just deleted everything.) What I did was create a new folder and dragged and dropped into the new folder and voila, it worked. Hopefully this can help you out.
