please help -- odd black screen problem

Hi all--

I'm running vista ultimate 32 w/sp2 and am having a bit of trouble! When I startup I get stuck at a black screen before I get to the login screen. There is a mouse cursor which works. But, ctrl-alt-delete and all the usual keystrokes don't work. Hitting shift 5 times does bring up sticky keys, but I can't get anywhere from that window (eg, there is IE link).

I tried booting into all the various safe modes. They all do the same exact thing as normal mode.

I had been performing malware removal and I changed permissions on some keys in my registry beforehand, so I know the problem is related to one of these actions. Because of this, I have two ideas in mind: 1) restoring an older registry; 2) recovering a system restore point. Both of these are failing though.

For restoring an old registry, I did copy over the oldest saved registry files in my regback directory, but this did not solve problem. I don't think they were old enough by looking at the timestamps, so I don't think they'll be useful.

For system restore, I booted off my Vista DVD and selected system restore, but it reports there are no restore points available. BUT, if I browse into SVI directory on my C: drive (where my vista 32 install is) I can see many restore points from this past month. I dual-boot, and I realize this can cause trouble, but I haven't booted into the other OS (64 bit vista) in a long time. The restore points in SVI are far after my last boot into 64bit vista env.

I have read that these restore points have backups of my registry within them, but I don't know how to access them manually or make vista recovery access them.

Does anyone know how to extract registry files from the restore points in SVI in recovery console? Or perhaps another approach given my scnenario... right now I'm stuck.

Thanks for your input!
