Suddenly I have no CD ROM

I have an HP dv6500 laptop running Vista Home Premium. Suddenly the CD ROM has quit working. It doesn't show on My Computer and at one time I got an error 39. I had Vista check the drivers and it said they were good. I'm only good enough on the computer to follow explicit instructions. When I put a CD in the drive the light will come on like it's reading but then goes off and it does nothing.

I got the below message when I tried the "fix now" from Microsoft.

We're sorry, but we encountered an unexpected problem and cannot complete this diagnostic solution.

When I went to the other site and did the download and tried to install it I was told it couldn't find the "target drive".
I've never had any luck with anything on the Microsoft site.

Try this:
Click Start and then click All Programs.
Click Accessories, and then click Run.
Type regedit, and then click OK.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
You may not see the UpperFilters entry. You do not need to remove UpperFilters.bak. Remove LowerFilters instead.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

Good Luck

In Upper filter there's only one line that says-GEARAspWDM
In Lower filter there's only one line that says-PxHELP20

I haven't done anything to either until I hear from you.
I took off some programs I wasn't using, like Roxio, could that have removed a needed file or driver?

Yes. I suggest you reinstall Roxio. Roxio is FAMOUS for messing with the UpperFilters and LowerFilters. It was such a pain to me before. Reinstall Roxio and see what happens.

Sincerely,
